Little Z and Pelletier are very unlikely to make the jump from juniors to the NHL.
I agree on Gawdin and Phillips though.

Alright here is my attempt at bringing in Hall and keeping the all the other top forwards...

Sign Taylor Hall for $8 million AAV
Sign Mangiapane for $2 million AAV
Sign Kylington & Gawdin to their QO's for $787,500
Sign Stone and Rinaldo for $700k (or similar depth guys)
Sign Johan Larsson and Tyler Pitlick for $1,000,000 AAV (or similar 4th liners)
Sign a back up goalie for $1,500,000 roughly

Trade Bennett and Ryan for picks. (or see below)
Graduate Phillips and Gawdin or whoever takes the open spots in camp

Taylor Hall - Sean Monahan - Matthew Tkachuk
Gaudreau - Elias Lindholm - Andrew Mangiapane
Dillon Dube - Mikael Backlund - Matthew Phillips
Milan Lucic - Johan Larsson - Tyler Pitlick

Zac Rinaldo, Glenn Gawdin

Mark Giordano - Rasmus Andersson
Noah Hanifin - XXXXX XXXXX
Jusso Valimaki - Oliver Kylington

Michael Stone

David Rittich
Back up Goalie

Total Cap Hit - $76,122,499

That leaves $5,377,501 to add a top 4 defensman, or maybe even two $2,500,000 AAV defensemen if you're so inclined.

Or, Buffalo is a team with a log jam of right shooting Dmen. Ristolainen, Montour, Miller, Jokiharju, and they also William Borgen ready to graduate. They also have a weakness at center, so maybe they would have interest in Bennett and/or Ryan and you could attach a pick to one of them and get Miller or Montour. I'd include Ristolainen as well, but I don't think the Flames have any interest there.

Anyways, I think if you want to:

1. Sign Hall
2. Keep all the other top 6 forwards
3. Ice an actual NHL Dcore

...it can be done, but you will have to move Ryan and Bennett and replace them with the guys above, or guys similar to the ones I picked above.

I like it Roof-Daddy. If it doesn’t work out, you trade Gaudreau at the next draft, recoup and add cap space. If anything I can see Gaudreau having a hell of a year playing on a line with Hall that can’t hurt his trade value.

And at least we loaded up and see what could happen, while giving some young kids a good opportunity and seeing what we have there.

Like other posters have said before, we’ve spent too much money on defence and our bottom 6 for the last ton of years.

Just curious, what good backup goalie can we get for 1.5m, I like Rittich but he can't handle a massive workload and hasn't shown an ability to stay healthy.

Dell is the natural target. Very Chad Johnson-like. Calgary native!

Even Dell has a 1.9m cap hit (2.2m salary) this season. You just can't get a good backup for under 2m.

In a cap strapped system if he wants more than 1 year I'm betting he'd sign for under $1.9

R-D, are you accounting the buyout money of Brouwer and Stone? That takes away like 2.67m.

Maybe. But there are plenty of non-contending teams with lots of cap space where maybe he could steal a starting job and not take less money.

He also played his first AHL games as a member of the Abbotsford Heat. I was going to say that he'd be familiar with a couple guys but literally not a single member of the 2013-14 Abbotsford Heat is still in the Flames organization.

It's a pretty gross list to be honest.

Thomas Greiss - 141 starts the last 4 seasons, .913 save %
Aaron Dell - 107 starts the last 4 seasons, .908 save %

I don't see either of them getting much more than that on the open market with a flat cap.

Brossoit is a guy you could look at but he'd be cheaper than $1.5 million. Has 40 starts in the last two years in Winnipeg and a .906 save %

Maybe the Flames can trade a draft pick and/or prospect for your boy Georgiev. .913 save % on 77 starts and I doubt his RFA contract will pay much more than $1.5 million.

There are also some aging vets on the list too, but some of them might make a few folks vomit in their mouth a tad bit haha.

Elliot
Smith
Howard
Anderson
Hutchison
Domingue

I wonder what Cory Crawford will get paid?

Yes but he signed that deal after two strong seasons with SJ. His last two weren't as good with the Sharks crumbling in front of him and Jones, I'd say he won't get $1.9 AAV this time.

Talbot got 2.75m after his time in Edmonton. Elliot is still making 2m. Lots of teams with cap space need goaltenders. I think guys like Dell and Talbot end up in places like Detroit, Ottawa, New Jersey... etc

It'll be interesting to see how the flat cap effects these things.

Also Talbot had just the one bad year really, before that he was starting 60-70 games and carrying the oilers. Can't really compare him to Dell.

I kind of hope they trade something for Jarry out of Pittsburgh, if they sign Murray to a long term extension. If the Pens are paying Murray starter money they won't want to have Jarry backing him up for $2 million I wouldn't think, especially when they still have DeSmith as well.

Giorgiev is another one. Rags still have Lundqvist, plus Shesterkin looks really good.

If they trade for one of those two and sign them for around $2 million AAV then they still have $4.8 million or so to shore up the top 4 D.

As a fan, here's what I'm looking at as a potential roster projection. Trying to be realistic and conservative here. No crazy swings in this projection.

To Columbus:
Oliver Kylington
Mark Jankowski
2020 2nd (CGY)

To Calgary:
Josh Anderson
Kevin Stenlund

--

To Philadelphia:
Johnny Gaudreau
Sam Bennett

To Calgary:
Travis Sanehim
Joel Farabee
2020 1st (PHI)
2021 2nd (PHI)

--

Re-signings

TJ Brodie: 6 years, $5.00 million AAV
Andrew Mangiapane: 2 years, $2.50 million AAV
Josh Anderson: 2 years, $2.25 million AAV
Kevin Stenlund: 1 year, $900k AAV
Glenn Gawdin: 2 years, $800k AAV
Tyler Parsons: 2 years, $800k AAV
Zac Rinaldo: 1 year, $800k AAV
Buddy Robinson: 1 year, $750k AAV
Michael Stone: 1 year, $750k AAV

UFA signings

Taylor Hall: 7 years, $7.50 million AAV
Aaron Dell: 1 year, $1.25 million AAV

And that leaves us with this...

Hall ($7.50) - Monahan ($6.375) - Lindholm ($4.85)
Tkachuk ($7.00) - Backlund ($5.35) - Mangiapane ($2.50)
Dube ($.778) - Ryan ($3.10) - Anderson ($2.25)
Lucic ($5.25) - Stenlund ($.900) - Farabee ($.925)
Rinaldo ($.750)

Giordano ($6.75) - Brodie ($5.00)
Hanifin ($4.95) - Andersson ($4.55)
Valimaki ($.894) - Sanheim ($3.25)
Mackey ($.925)/Stone ($.750)

Rittich ($2.75)
Dell ($1.25)

Dead cap: $2.667

Total cap hit: $81.264 million

It's tight! But it works. And I think it checks out.

I'm curious as to which Dmen you leave exposed for the ED. You have 5 that need protecting. Which 3 do you protect? Hanifin, Andersson and Sanheim I presume? Or are you using the 4-4-1 protection model?
