I know some don't like it, but I could really see a Hanifin for Domi swap.
Flames need another option for an offensive top 6 C since Bennett and Jankowski have both kind of flamed out. Some say just move Lindholm to C but then RW is a total mess and all left handed shots.
Montreal has Danault, Domi, Suzuki and Kotkaniemi as C's and they could really use a good, young cost controlled LHD to pair with Weber.
Hanifin for Domi
Sign Hall
Use Bennett, Janko, Kylington as trade bait to get another middle six right shooting RW option
Sign a UFA D to replace Hanifin
Oh yeah, and win the draft lottery if they lose to the Jets

I don't hate it, Domi would add skill and grit which we need, but I'd really like to see Hanifin play a season away from Hamonic. I think he could be a lot better with Andersson or even Brodie on his pairing.

Please also remember Hanifin is younger then Andersson and barely older then Kylington.

According to McKenzie, unless something changes, the signing bonuses will be paid out tomorrow as scheduled.

In order, Habs fans seem to rate their own centres : Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Danault, then Domi. Not that any of them are bad, and I actually like Domi, but the people who watch them play think that he is the most expendable. They also don't see the need for 4 top six centres.
If they want Hanifin, I wouldn't accept anything less than Kotkaniemi. The knock against him was that he was slight for his height, and could get bumped off the puck, but he has put on 10 lbs of muscle during the covid.

I love the idea of Domi - but the expansion draft does come into consideration.
Monahan
Lindholm
Hall/Gaudreau
Mangiapane
Backlund
Tkachuk
That means that we're out one of Bennett, Domi or Dube - unless you expose Backlund. Shedding Hanifin for picks/prospects that aren't eligible for the expansion draft would be pretty dang great (if you can keep Brodie)
Giordano - Brodie
Valimaki - Andersson
Kylington - ?
+ assets from Hanifin
Or
Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - ?
Valimaki - ?
Kylington
I like the 1st group of defensemen better than the 2nd even without the assets from Hanifin.

Definitely. I like Hanifin, I just like the idea of retaining Brodie while gaining the assets from Hanifin.

Seems like kind of a stretch that we could get the 3rd overall from two years ago for Hanifin. He's also struggled in the NHL so far and likely wouldn't have the same "win now" impact that Domi would bring immediately to the Flames roster.

Hanifin was the 5th overall in 2015, and is on a sweetheart contract. If Montreal wants to fix their crappy blueline, they can pay.

If you sign Hall, keep Johnny, and trade for a 2C like Domi:
1. Gaudreau 26
2. Tkachuk 23
3. Monahan 25
4. Hall 28
5. Lindholm 25
6. Domi 25
7. Mangiapane 23
8. Backlund 32
Comes down to the bottom two and if which one can be replaced easier. Age and cap hit also are part of the equation.

1. Win the lottery
2. Sign Hall
3. Trade Hanifin for Domi
Taylor Hall - Sean Monahan - Johnny Gaudreau
Matt Tkachuk - Max Domi - Elias Lindholm
Alex Lafreniere - Mikael Backlund - Andrew Mangiapane
Milan Lucic - Dillon Dube - Matthew Phillips
Haha
I don't want to see the defense though. Would be total patchwork after Gio and Ras.

No thanks to the Domi trade. I think trading Hanifin would be a mistake unless you land a legit young #1C

I legit do not understand all the Domi love. Like at all. It baffles me. Not only that but the undervaluing of Noah hanifin. Maybe it's just me but not in a million years would I ever trade Hanifin for Domi..

I like Domi (sorry ballin), he plays with bite and feistiness, and I think he we would like him here-but he's pretty inconsistent year to year. I would be very careful of who we trade Hanifin for....

This might be borne out of ignorance, but his type 1 diabetes makes me worry about his long-term durability, especially if we're giving up one of our most valuable young assets.

I hate it when people point out how young Hanafin is, because McDavid is only about 2 weeks older.
At least Hanafin has more games played. Take that, McDavid.

People point it out because dmen normally take longer to develop...and yeah McDavid has a lot to learn about defending considering he scores 100 points and is a minus player. (although that is likely the worst comparison ever)

Leafs paying out $40.59M today to 3 players by the sounds of it, yikes.

Late to this and been reading about this idea of "Trade Johnny" sign Hall. At least yours somehow keeps both.
Did I miss the part where Halls abysmal injury record was discussed? Or the fact that he has 1 single 90 point season and never over 70 due to injuries usually? I love the way the guy skates and plays (especially his skating!) but I don't know how much value he'sd bring this team if he's a part time player.

I would imagine they would have to.
Unless there is stipulations these are semi legal contracts. Then again the league can allow them to be bought out, so what do I know.

If we can get kotkaniemi for hanifin I'm all over it. I'm pretty meh on the idea of domi for hanifin... just don't see domi cracking into our top 6 as is.
