There's nothing they can focus on to get done for the fall. With the 2nd wave, there's little to no chance (in my opinion) that the the 20/21 season will be a full season. The season won't start without fans, and I don't see anyway sporting events have fans at any time in 2020.
I think this TV-only conclusion to the 19/20 season is the only hockey we'll be seeing in 2020 - if it happens.

Yeah way too many teams...why include teams that were out of the race?

They are conducting tests on if dogs can sniff out this virus as they can for other diseases including certain cancers.
If the results are conclusive, why not have dogs sniff out the players and staff before game day. No bark you're in. A few barks you're quarantined.
We just need to make sure that they bark non stop every time the No Goods try to step on the ice!

How would you determine the current 16?
What this would really be is a modified way to finish to the regular season, and more quickly resolving the teams who had chances between probably/maybe/long shot of making the playoffs.
Frankly, 82 games was too long to begin with.

The Quebec health minister was on and she had a humorous statement about how “hockey players would respect the 2 meter rule”. The other fellow said something about quarantine but was not too enthusiastic about it.

Points percentage is the fairest way to determine the current 16, I know it shafts the Flames but I see no other alternative. Giving 24 teams a chance essentially nullifies everything up to this point, it seems like a money grab in all honesty.

This is a funny image.
Reminds me of departing an airport in Cuba in the 00s where they had dogs sniff the luggage as you were waiting for your flight.

This happens in Florida when you arrive too, especially if you're waiting to go through customs. I even saw a guy get pulled out of line once after a dog became "very interested" in his bag.

Isn't dogs sniffing bags at the airport a pretty common thing? I've seen that everywhere.

I am not super pumped about the possibility of making this year's playoffs a novelty, but I am getting the sense that it is critical to the league to get some revenue. Might have to suck it up or we might see significant contraction if the 2020/2021 season can't go ahead.

Why would the next season not start without fans? And if that's their directive there's a chance we will not see a 20/21 season then. This is a new normal. Lots of things will go back to the way they were, but mass gatherings of tens of thousands of fans likely won't be allowed until there's a vaccine.
There's also a chance that there is no vaccine, but in that case sports would likely start to open to fans with a good percentage not willing to pay and be part of big crowds.

The border is open to lots of people FYI.
It isn’t as hard to travel right now for business as some would be making you believe
Athletes would have zero issue traveling

Winnipeg Jets just sent season ticket holders an e-mail to either receive a refund or credit for next year, with payment for refund to happen in June.

I think they would absolutely start without fans in 2020-21. That's one of the benefits of the CBA - if the revenue is reduced by lack of fans, both owners and players share the loss. But, both owners and players make *some* money. And both sides will want that.
However, assuming the NHL insists on trying to complete this season, I would think that the 2020-21 season will be shortened simply to give a bit of a break between a July/August end of this season and a September/October start to next season.
Semi-related, I really wonder how the impact on junior hockey will affect the NHL? The CHL especially I simply cannot see operating without fans. The development pipeline is going to be seriously affected by all of this.
