The coronavirus is going to get far worse before it gets better.

Yes, the elderly, with underlying problems are the most susceptible.

However, others can carry the virus without any symptoms and spread it for up to 14 days.

That is a huge problem that’s not getting better anytime soon.

Exactly. There is a lag between people getting infected with Covid and it being confirmed by test

Exposure for confirmed tests happened days or weeks ago and the spread has been happening in the meantime

Social distancing is needed sooner rather than later

The NHL will do the right thing and cancel everything until further notice

Initially I was hoping for games in empty buildings, but I have moved past that

They can get back to normalcy, worrying about syphilis instead of COVID

I think they should call it for the rest of the regular season, if good to return in april, let each team play its last one or two scheduled regular season games to get their legs under them, then head into the playoffs.

I worry that a month off out of game action, then to jump right into the playoffs would result in injuries to the playes

And yet China saw only 8 new cases yesterday.

This is going to be an interesting ride.

Especially since, as I posted earlier, cancelling things early vs. late is the difference between 50 in 100,000 vs. 250 in 100,000 people dying (St. Louis vs. Philadelphia during the 1918 spanish flu).

That is not true, the death rate doesn't change because you've gone into lockdown. By going into lockdown you slow the transmission rate and therefore ease the impact on the society (think hospitals, etc). The same number of people are likely to be affected in the long term, but what you want to avoid is an exponential spike which can cripple a country (see:Italy).

Edit: I may have misunderstood - were you saying the deaths overall will be less if you go into lockdown (true) or the death rate would go down (not true).?

Second edit: I have been doing some more reading and apparently I am actually wrong here, and it makes complete sense why. My apologies to Kovaz. If you go into lockdown and the system does not get overwhelmed you are far more likely to survive, so this does in fact affect the death rate.

Yes, information from China can be trusted. They’ve been very transparent from the get go.

Summer NHL hockey would be such a ride.

Imagine going to a playoff game then wandering through the midway afterward. Stampede would naturally become the red mile.

The alternative may be no games at all. Maybe in the summer some arenas have an NHL game in the morning and NBA game in the evening.

It's about compromise I suppose.

When we get through this. it's going to be a fantastic release to have sports to watch.

No surprise here with most AHL players on NHL contracts.

Yup, because China is handling this properly. We need extreme social distancing measures taken now at a national scale. Cancel all large events, close all non-essential services, advise everyone to stay at home unless absolutely necessary - now, this gets complicated however, because if you close schools it will force nurses, doctors, police officers etc. to stay home if they have children... It needs to be well thought out, yet it needs to happen quickly.

From what I understand, China's basketball league set to resume in early April, meaning it was shut down for about 10 weeks.

If you guys are interested Joe Rogan had a really good guest on to speak about the virus.
He specializes in this type of virus and had a lot of real solid things to say. I found it informative.
