Chris Johnston @reporterchris
At least one road team in a NHL city that is still officially scheduled to play tonight has started making plans to fly home this afternoon.

NCAA or at least some of their individual conferences have completely suspended several spring sports like lacrosse. CIS (Canadian sport) has several national championships coming up over the next few weeks, I wonder if we see those cancelled this year.

Edit to add - the various junior hockey leagues will have decisions to make too.

Golf and the PGA will be interesting mainly due to the travel ban from Europe. The European Tour has postponed a few events already. Any European players currently not in the US might find it impossible to come over an play now. With the Masters coming up in a month I would think this would affect more than a few players ??

Not much spread in the YYC area. You're probably fine for a game, without being an awful human being for wanting to see it played.

But hey, #### you too.

Sorry buddy you are on the wrong side of this one. Shut it down and shut it down now.

Even though we think YYC doesn’t have much for cases it is likely far worse than we think already.

Yeah, the whole 'it's just the media!' is the dumbest argument there is. China shut down cities of millions... was it the Chinese state run media that caused that frenzy? Or the American media influencing the Chinese government? Sometimes a crisis is actually a crisis.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Sources say some NHL road teams are planning on heading to the airport and will await word on whether to stay or go.

"Not much spread in YYC area"

You been living under a rock today? Kid who was in daycare at suncor centre (and walked around all the plus 15s and foodcourt...) confirmed case this morning. Seems like many people are about to have it.

This is exactly why leagues need to be suspended. People that think they are fine, or are fine, may be in proximity of one who isn't, and doesn't know it yet. Not giving them the choice to go, or even play at all, is the best course of action.

This scenario just made a lot of people who wouldn't have got it, now get it. There's a reason they are shutting down big crowds, because it'll make the virus spread considerably then.

Hearing as part of the #NHL's due diligence process, teams have been asked to provide arena building availability through the end of July.

One thing that's essential to understand:

Quote:
the number of true cases [...] is likely to be between one and two orders or magnitude higher than it is officially reported.
When there was 444 official cases in Wuhan, we now know there was actually about 12,000 (27x higher). So waiting until we have a large number of official cases is too late. Especially since, as I posted earlier, cancelling things early vs. late is the difference between 50 in 100,000 vs. 250 in 100,000 people dying (St. Louis vs. Philadelphia during the 1918 spanish flu).

Hmmm...

@PierreVLeBrun: Hearing that on-ice officials who are on the road now to work NHL games have been told to book flights home ....

I was at the Oilers game last night and ran into Glen Gulutzan.

Now take this with a grain of salt. He ended up getting a table next to us and at one point we were all sure he said he would be shocked if there was hockey being played tomorrow to his buddy.

Maybe.. but if it is then that would be a complete failure of our Public health system.

from the CBC ( the political arm of the government)

What should you do if you have symptoms?

If you are under 50 years old and otherwise healthy, just stay home and take care of yourself. Definitely don't go to hospital, says Dr. Andrew Morris, an infectious disease specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

Just ignore who you have been in contact with over the last couple of days... If you were at the Flames game sitting next to some older people.... just ignore them maybe you just have a cold and you will recover anyway.

Now that a major league has pulled the trigger, there's no excuse for the NHL to not do this. Every game delayed is a potential black mark against them.

Agreed. Borderline joke that it hasn't happened already. We need to close down movie theatres bars and other establishments now too.

I wonder what the Flames think of the idea of potentially hosting playoff games during the Stampede.
