What's wrong with Gaudreau? He doesn't want to be in one of hockey's hinterlands. Simple as that. Calgary is a last stop on the NHL circuit and no one whats to be there if they have a choice. Can you blame them?

We have a lot of Flames alumni that live here in Calgary.

I have no idea why you cheer for the Flames. You hate pretty much everything about the team and the city.

Yup, according to NHL.com:

Quote:
The Calgary Flames Alumni, founded in 1993, is one of the oldest Alumni chapters in professional hockey. We are here to help those in need and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. There are currently more than 150 Alumni who have decided to call Calgary home. This includes both Calgary Flames Alumni as well as Alumni from various NHL teams around the league.

Coaching is another. JG thrived under Hartley and his transition speed, he failed under GG and thrived again under Peters until he changed the strategy after the Colorado embarrassment. Ward is continuing on the same path, slower and more defensive play. JG wants run and gun and speed speed speed. He’s an awesome backchecker when he wants to.

And I’ve said it for a year, split JG and Monahan up. JG with Lindholm, Monahan with Tkachuk.

As for any off ice issues I won’t speculate, but IF he’s not taking care of himself it’s a problem. It’s s competitive now and everybody is so fit that you can’t get by being in “ok” shape.
Gaudreau had his second highest point season under GG, the year they didn’t make the POs. He had his lowest under GG the year they did make the POs First under Peters. And Gaudreau did not like Hartley at all. I’m not convinced coaching has much to do with it.

I am hearing the Hall was traded by Edmonton for similar off-ice issues that Johnny is rumoured to have.

It does explain why they seemed to except a less than stellar return.

Or guys from elsewhere who played only a small portion of the career here, like Rene Corbet.

Interference is being run on him but not in a way refs can really call. He comes in, buttonholes and finds all of his regular avenues are closed due to traffic and pressure so he ends up forcing a low percentage play and it goes the other way. Johnny gets frustrated and down on himself.

Not sure why the flames don't mix iit up though, with 3 guys squeezing off Johnny that theoretically opens up space on the other side. And getting others to carry the puck in might force the other team not to key on Johnny's entries. I'm sure it's more complicated than I'm making it out to be but that's what I've seen.

Yes Hall is no stranger...

“Hall had problems off the ice, and went to rehab during the summer of his trade (2016).”

Johnny’s less engaged and isn’t dangerous when he has the puck. Looks frustrated. I agree that the vision is still there. But he’s not the gamebreaker like he used to be.

I have a few guesses but they’re only based on speculation. I miss Johnny Hockey

Johnny has been one of the most elite 5v5 players over the last few years, and has typically been poor to average on the PP. My feeling is that it's due to the need for him to carry the puck on the rush to score or pass, as his shot is fairly weak. He also is good at carrying the puck from side to side.

The change seems to be that the Flames are less reliant on Johnny carrying the puck, and that hurts his game. The "proof" is hard to find, but his 5v5 zone entries/60 are way down (26.9 entries/60 to 21.2 this year and it's been increasing). This year he doesn't seem to be carrying it out of the zone near as much either, and you almost never see him on his off wing on the rush like before.

The reasons may be he's disinterested, scared of contact, team play style change, opposition players key on him more, who knows. What the result seems to be though is less touches for Johnny. That also means less scoring chances for Monahan, Lindholm, etc. Also means less assists for Gio, Brodie, etc. The offense has run through Gaudreau the last number of years, and now it's suddenly not.

Laraque apologized for this the next day and said he was wrong.

Well, that is an exceedingly odd mistake to make, is it not?

Sure, but it is not a surprising or unexpected mistake. Laroque is a massive Oilers fan who is known to tell lies:

He later admitted that had he been caught, he might have been terminated.

"Knowing that, it’s probably safe to assume that like many fans in Edmonton, he’s sick of talking about the Hall trade...

"I’m not going to suggest what Laraque is saying should be taken as gospel or is even remotely true. I have no idea where his information is coming from. A former NHL player known to make the media rounds and provide his often controversial opinion, there is every possibility this is just a player talking with no real proof to back anything up. He’s been known to 'break news' that often doesn’t come to fruition."

The mistake was likely opening his big mouth about it not that it wasn't true, Laraque is likely in tune with his former team and would know a tonne of off ice issues, but he should never share them publicly.

I am surprised that anyone outside of Edmonton would be so willing to extend the benefit of doubt to a rumour-monger with a known tendency to traffic false or baseless information and with an obvious axe to grind about the Hall trade.

Yeah, I am not seeing anything in your quoted info that reasonably helps me think it is inaccurate or fabricated. Hiding info about a cross country trip to see a playoff game?

You are a smart guy, I think you are better at using common sense than that
