This contract makes me wonder if Tkachuk actually hit Ken Holland in the head...

I hate to check team TOI stats to see that Kassian actually played in the 2nd and 3rd periods tonight...didn't notice him once (or recall hearing his name)

This is market value. Or maybe even less than UFA market value.
This is also why you always let someone else sign them

This contract is going to get bought out in two years if Edmonton finds an actual top six forward to take Kassian's place.
|
I was thinking the same thing. They win a couple more draft lotteries and get even a half-assed decent winger Kassian's production is going to sink faster than the Titanic and they'll be paying him for absolutely nothing.
This reminds me when the Canucks always had a random winger on the Sedin line who constantly wanted to get paid because he was the only one who never realized that he was really just there to make up the numbers.

Outside of the fight, Kassian was pretty much a non factor, in fact to manufacture how awesome he is, Sportsnet showed his psycho glare from the bench at MT after the first goal.
The fight wasn't a epic beat down of Tkachuk, MT protected himself well. The only other noticable thing with Kassian was his bungling of the 2 on 1. Other then that he was minus two and had that one shot and floated around.
Welcome to the age of lazy satisfied Kassian Edmonton Fans enjoy the next 4 and a half years of it.

I recall in the first he had a two on one with McDavid of all people. And elected to shoot a muffin that Rittich grabbed easily.
You know who else was a complete non-factor - James Neal. Despite being on the ice with McDavid a hell of a lot.

Yeah, he's coming down the ice with McDavid, and doesn't even look at him once, he does his angry glare at BSD while basically telegraphing that he's shooting. Dave makes the big save, basically gives Kassian the "You are a loser" glare back and acts like it was the easiest save of the year.

The smarter Oilers fans were mad about this on twitter.
They were talking about how this is a guy they healthy scratched and were actively looking to move last year, and in the offseason.
Now you want to lock him up for 4 seasons, and extend him. Hmm wonder what changed YoY.
18/19: 496 minutes with Draisaitl or McDavid, 552 with neither
19/20: 624 minutes with Draisaitl or McDavid, 60 with neither.
So last year he played 47% of his 5v5 ice time with at least one of the big two, this year he's played 91% of his 5v5 ice time with at least one of the big two.
Oilers management keep forgetting that playing subpar players with McDavid is supposed to be a "Pump and Dump" not "Pump and Re-sign to UFA contract".

It's just too much term for a 29 year old winger who's probably going to lose a step in the next couple of years. I could understand if he was a center but not a winger that's having a career season as it will be diminished returns from here on in. For a team that's not been able to supplement their roster with skill due to salary cap woes they sure like overspending on keeping their depth players.

I love this deal as a Flames fan. Locking up cap space so they can't actually get a good player.
Holland is a horrible GM imo. Detroit's success was thanks to their scouting system that plucked out some great European players from nowhere.

This is similar to the Koskinen contract (even the timing is similar) as it's the kind of panic move that bad teams make. I simply don't see many teams having a lot of interest in signing him to this deal in free agency as teams are well aware that his offensive success is a product of playing with McDavid as off that line. Is he really more than double the salary better than Hathaway? I don't think so.

They even did a statistical analysis a week ago linking his production to McDavid, remove McDavid and Kassian's effectiveness drops to near 0.
No matter, pay the man his money!
The Positives of Zack Kassian:
- Hes here already
- Apparently doesnt mind the soul-crushing stinkpit that is Edmonton
- Plays hockey
Sign him up!
