Again, maybe I am wrong.
But when a teacher dressed up as a black person in 2000, your response is now "he's racist and should have been removed as the Liberal leader."

You don't see how that's confusing?

You're looking at consistency, fair enough, I get that. But you're trying to draw a parallel situation between two very different situations. And when you get pretty much the exact same situation but your response changes from "Racist, needs to be fired" and "She did nothing wrong" you can't admit the bias?

Ah finally, a place on the internet where I can discuss who is more racist: Bill Peters or Justin Trudeau. Al Gore’s vision is complete.

I understand the liability issues at stake here but perhaps something could have been said that reflects the organization’s values?

It was agreed by both parties that is is best for Bill and the Flames to part company. The league has informed us they will be completing the investigation that we began and we will have no further comment. I want to make a few things perfectly clear. Our organization has no tolerance for racist language or behavior. We have no tolerance for physical, mental or emotional abuse of our employees....”

Some things should be said explicitly IMO. Many CEO’s and executives have been fired for improper conduct while still agreeing to a settlement. The public statements, while lacking detail, will at least confirm the company’s stance on issues that arose and were alleged.

Just my opinion, but in return for the big cheque the Flames just cut Mr. Peters, they could have secured his and his attorney’s sign off on a public statement regarding the termination of his contract that would have put the organization in the best possible light without slandering him. I’m surprised they didn’t do this. And again he has admitted to some of this.

They may well have zero tolerance for this stuff and in fact, I expect they do. It’s a shame because this is essentially a problem they inherited with perhaps only a very, very small inkling this could have been in his history (where there’s smoke, there’s fire).

Now it’s really the league that will be doing this and more. Which is good for the Flames from a liability perspective.

Default Shame on us

Oh Ye Hypocrites!

As a handy but not at all rare example, Sportsnet (for profit) has invested say $1M in resources to focus on and facilitate pontification on this issue.

This is one man saying something in the presence of very few people 10 years ago. An incident apparently of such monumental import it deserves this attention and priority.

That $1M (not to mention the untold value of the other resources that have been spent publicizing this particular incident) could have been (theoretical imagery only) spent helping children currently being victimized by sex slave traffickers or subsidizing currently suffering (some in terrible situations) patients unable to obtain proper medical services... certainly dozens of other unquestionably more important and urgent matters.

Let's be clear... many people have and continue to choose to be offended by what other people say.

Despite this we are free apparently to continue marginalizing and being pejorative about all sorts of things that a person cannot control. People can be targeted for being short, their pedigree, for being unattractive, uncoordinated or for any number of differences.

However... you must not... as today's PC mob logic dictates... ever... use "that" word.

I'm sorry but every reasonable thinking person of even average intelligence has to understand how silly we must look rising in our combined indignation over this specific incident... while seemingly impervious to or choosing to distance ourselves from readily available issues that are obviously much larger and more urgent... and yet apparently not.

Use of the N word is something most would like to see gone... but wow!

Firing the man! Public flogging! Shame on us.

Ten years ago Bill Peters seems to have been observed acting as an insensitive bully... but his actions/behavior then... in that incident... pale in comparison to the degree of insensitive bullying we're inflicting on him now.

God damn I'm loving what I'm hearing from Tim and Sid right now.

Sid basically saying where the hell is the league, where is Hockey Canada. Why is the only person trying to get out in front of this Brad Treliving, and why is he being left out to dry from all the organizations where Peters actually did these things. Credit for being the only person to get in front of a camera and deal with this

Well said.

Holy ####. A God damn time traveler. How did you manage to travel 100 years into the future? Do smart phones blow you away?

There's no way anyone but a time traveler is blaming the N word's 'controversy' on today's PC culture...

I believe the league should be looking at discipline for this and I don’t believe that means I’m looking for bloodshed. Players get suspended without pay for all kinds of transgressions.

Shouldn’t this merit discipline if found to be true? Right now it seems the Flames are honoring their financial commitment to Peters. His reputation has suffered, but to this point everything I’ve heard leads me to believe that is justified. Is that enough? I’m not so sure.

Good on them for saying it and I too commend Treliving, but I suspect these organizations were paying some measure of respect to the Flames by allowing them to finish their process before muddying the waters.

Either way, I certainly don't envy Brad Treliving over the past week. I hope the impact isn't too enduring, and hopefully the pressure now shifts away from him and the Flames.

Personally I don’t get why hockey Canada would wade into this issue. They have nothing to do with the NHL

What’s with people talking about threads going “off the rails” anyways?

Posting on a message board isn’t like a train on rigid tracks. It’s more akin to white water rafting. You hold on for deal life and see where the rapids take you. If you’re lucky you don’t go over a giant waterfall or have your boat get wrecked on the rocks, only to swim ashore and find out that you’re deep in hillbilly territory and a mountain man you meet in the woods says you’ve got a real perdy mouth and asks you to squeal like a pig. But I digress.

Someone buy Treliving a damned drink. Holy smokes was he shook during that presser. And Kudos to him for holding the line when the hard questions were asked.

And I do hope we hear more from the league and HC because this is bigger than the Flames and it needs to be addressed.

Anywho, seems like a minor saving of Face having Bill Peters resign instead of fired. Maybe he does have a kinship with Tree and just let it go so he didnt have to deal with the issue any longer.

It's done now, let's get back to hockey.

Mad respect Tree , mad respect.

Well, I suppose not. But they also have used Peter's and presumably have more ears in places than anyone else. I think it's fair to ask some questions to everyone in hockey.

They should be taking on the bullying and abuse by coaches in hockey that is coming to light.

I'm guessing there was a financial agreement and various other terms in place contingent on Peters' resignation. Let's not kid ourselves, this wasn't a buddy buddy situation between Treliving and Peters.

How is Treliving left out to dry? Treliving quite specifically thanked NHL for their part in the process, calling it "amazing" as I recall. Treliving had to deal with Bill Peters because he's his boss.

Later on NHL and Hockey Canada should probably do some campaigns against bullying in dressing rooms and racism in particular, but that's big picture stuff. I don't see how getting a lot more talking heads involved in this specific thing would have improved anything.
