That's pretty powerful.

I hope at least a percentage of this can be attributed to the drawn out nature of the last few days. At the onset, I felt sentiment was probably 90%+ anti-Peters. But the more we argue about the same issue on the internet, the less the event/actions matter, and it becomes about winning an argument in a vacuum. We play with various what if scenarios and have versions of the same conversation.
I believe most of the board, the city, the province, the country, understand why this was over the line, and I don't think anyone is going to be spamming their Facebook page with "Justice 4Peters" BS like when Grapes was fired.
I said this in another thread, racism is a malignant cancer upon the human condition. It can only ever be in remission, and when we as a society think we've won the fight against it, we have to remember that isn't correct.

I think a very fair question is whether the Flames considered any allegations of Peters behavior outside of the racism incident from 10 years ago.I also think it’s fair to ask how Treliving would characterize Peters leadership style during his time here.
I’m not expecting any real answers of course but is this going to come down only to Peters using racist language or will the organization have anything broader to say about abusive behavior.
He might refuse to answer any questions about Peters other than he is no longer coaching the Flames as they may well be working on a settlement with him, or will in the future. There’s no reason for that to be done before relieving him of his duties but you sure as hell better watch what you say. Since Peters admitted publicly to the racist incident that could at least be referenced.

The positives of this scenario is that hopefully players and people in and around the league will feel empowered to speak up if racial abuse and slurs occur; that going forward, there is zero tolerance for this extremely important issues. If it takes Bill Peters and Babcock and however many more abusive coaches losing their jobs, so this culture shift in the game can take place, then I say bring it on.
Physicality and being physical as a grown man in a position of trust towards young teenagers and men is also a technique that creates conformity based on the principles of power being exacted on anyone who speaks out, fear of repercussions and career's being deep sixed. I think we will see this start to change dramatically as a result of these incidents.

[MOD EDIT] Let's not derail this thread into a political debate. There's a forum for that.
Lol really, it was as relevant as Alanis or anything else posted here

1: Yes. But not in the NHL... Europe/Russia.
2: You mean other revelations of mistreatment? Of course... there already have been. Don't know if it'll be any other current coaches in the NHL thou.
3: I think it's going that way naturally already. I think teams that presently still want to hire "hardasses" will still hire them (for now) but they'll probably be more cautious in ensuring that they never crossed any lines in their hardassery.

It probably goes without saying, I suggest not going to TSN’s Facebook page. I’m hearing Society’s worst are coming out of the woodshed and are just filling their page with racism

I'm also shocked they didn't turn it all around in 24 hours with little practice time while on the road.

Pretty shetty things he said, but I could have sworn cancel culture was passe after Trudeau got a complete pass.
I understand there are consequences to actions, but jesus, apparently you're never allowed to work again if you make a mistake.

I think we can feel bad for Peters, and I think we can forgive him - and we ought to, should his apology be sincere. He's facing the consequences of his actions, and if he's reflecting on this the way he ought to, he'll come out of it on the other end as a better person - one we shouldn't look down on.

This whole fiasco has had me thinking a lot recently about remorse and recompense. A pretty big deal was made by Aliu when he told his story about the lack of any apology from Peters. Then again, attention was drawn to his own claim in the letter he wrote to Treliving that he apologized immediately for his actions.
Beyond the fact that these two claims don't really align, I am wondering how much it would have mattered. I mean, of course, if Peters was remorseful and had changed and grown since the incident I would expect an apology. But I would also expect a hell of a lot more. I don't think for something like this it is enough to merely say "I'm sorry." Yeah, Bill Peters can come back from this, and I hope he does so, but it's going to take time and a tonne of growth. If he ever gets another opportunity to coach professional hockey again, it should only happen after he has demonstrated an unequivocal and obvious change in his character.
Sometimes, an apology is just not even close to enough.
|
Well said. I’m reading between the lines here, but I didn’t see much genuine remorse in that letter. His comment about use of language in a professional environment leaves me wondering just how often he has talked like that in private.
I just don’t think he’s a good person based on all that I have heard. He has made lots of money in his life so maybe he can step back, humble himself and learn something and maybe take a more supervised coaching role for a non NHL team at some point.
