Projection. Instead of owning up to getting confused by the concept he instead decided to pretend that everyone correcting him were the people confused. In reality just makes him look like a bigger maroon.

So, the $290 million can go towards an arena or it can go towards another study and re-design that will find that they still don't have enough money to build the green line.
At least with the arena there will be something to show for it at the end of the day.

Atlanta Flames were purchased for $16 million. Seems like it’s been a sound investment vehicle for the owners who were in at the beginning.

They probably did better on other investments. $16 Million in 1980 in Calgary... And how many of them are even alive?

8-9% annual growth, plus yearly profits? Spit-ball those at $1m-$10m per, and it's not a poor investment that's for sure.

What is? The oil industry? So why would people not go to Edmonton where they have better entertainment? The oil industry is collapsing slowly but surely. There has been a poster who stated they would probably move in this thread. You are in favour of putting the arena money toward a transit deal that needs way more money to even get done. You need to realize that money is not moving the needle at all, you will just end up wirh no upgraded transit, no Flames, no new arena which means no future Olympics, no other big national sporting events. Be careful what you wish for.

I was against public funding for a new arena from the outset. But reviving the issue now is just political grandstanding on Wooley's part. Makes me lose a lot of respect for him, to be honest. The deal is done, move on.

Also have to consider how much money they have put in after the initial purchase. Some lean years in the young era and the 1995 Dome reno were not cheap.

The outdoors. Mountains. Jobs. Opportunity. (sure, maybe less but Alberta still has the highest earnings in the country) Family. Friends. Community. Chinooks. Scared to move elsewhere. Not being surrounded by "no good".
There are lots of answer to this question that aren't "the Flames"

So unemployed oil industry people will stick around in Edmonton but not Calgary because there's an arena hosting events they wouldn't be able to afford?

Nothing happening until 1:15pm onward. There were technical problems at the City Clerks desk so they've delayed the start of the meeting.

Apparently there is also something like two dozen proposed amendments to the budget, so they are trying to sort all of that out too (all the procedural questions). Could be a late night for council.

Was told by the organization 2 years ago that the owners have never taken profits/dividends.

No, as the job market shrinks in oil there will still be jobs in the industry but all of the people working them are not going to live in Calgary given the choice between the two.

just stop. you're wrong on so many levels. there will not be a mass exodus from calgary if the flames leave. you are severely overestimating their popularity AND importance to the average calgarian. do you seriously think a significant number of people who own houses, have families, have jobs and lives in calgary are going to move to EDMONTON, of all places, simply because they have an NHL team?
calgary having the flames is icing on an already delicious cake. will it suck if they are forced to leave? yep. are they going to be taking a large number of the 1.3M people who live here with them when they go? absolutely not. just stop.

People moving to Edmonton to watch the Oilers play if the Flames leave town is quite possibly the worst arena argument I've heard yet. And that's saying alot considering how bad these arguments are to being with!
