Wait, Peters ‘doubled down’? I find the absolutely impossible to believe. Like, I actually don’t believe that.

Also, I’m a bit surprised at how perfect everyone and their acquaintances are. I’ve personally had music I’ve listened to called ###### music, amongst other things, by otherwise perfectly reasonable (in the context I knew them) by more than 1 co-worker. Now, I’m not black so I know it’s different, but I don’t believe any of those people should lose their job now for an ignorant thing they said years ago.

Were your coworkers the coach of a national sports team that's televised across NA?

If this was some equipment handler guy sure, we can forgive and move on. But this is the head coach, a hugely public figure.

There's a big difference.

good grief.
So far over the last couple of days, different posters have said “stupid,” “boomer,” and “Jesus Christ” are as bad as the n-word.

Not only has this been embarrassing to watch, but it shows why even ten years ago guys like Peters thought it was okay to use that word and why some people still do. While there are some people who are genuinely hateful, there are also people who simply don’t get it. You have to wonder that if people don’t understand the context behind the n-word in 2019 and why comparisons like “boomer” are ridiculous, that they may never get it.

You don’t have to feel that one is okay and one isn’t. But suggesting these things are equal is just grossly ignorant or purposely minimising the seriousness of racism.

Pretty sure he wasn’t in the capacity at the time.

Just desserts, 9 years later, and we get to pat ourself on the back as social revolutionaries. Justice. Or at least we can tell ourselves that, while ignoring the injustices that actually still happen, but don’t hit our twitter feed I guess.

In high school in the 90s many people called them N-beats

I always assumed it was because the Nword being used a minimum of 10x a song not because it was made for or by black people

Not something I would ever say as an adult though, especially in a high level position with young kids

I kinda find it hard to believe so many people have never heard terms like that though...especially back in the day

I personally find the history of abusing players to be much much worse than the Aliu thing, yet it's getting way less attention

Pressing F on the world's smallest keyboard for all the poor white people that can't say the n-word anymore.

Since we are mentioning our experiences from working enviroment, I will throw in my own. I am working in IT department of a European insurance company. My team is as multicultural as it can be, I have colleagues from India, Nepal, Armenia, Nigeria, Greece, Vietnam, Ghana, Russia etc. Sometimes we do patching that has to be done over night. It's a long, boring process, but also a perfect time to watch some Flames hockey, given the timezone.
One of my colleagues is from Nigeria, great guy. Loves pro sports and betting, diehard Real Madrid fan. Grew up in London and never came across hockey before, so I am trying to get him into it. It's hilarious when we watch a game and he gets confused seeing a goalie skating to the bench because of a signalized penalty. So two days ago we were watching the game against the Pens, I was checking CP meanwhile and then that thing came out. You should have seen my buddy's face. He was like:"Oh.. here we go again..". I felt pretty embarrased to be honest.

Baggage. Your history comes with you.

We can also focus on more than one injustice at a time.

Maybe next time a coach or anyone in a position of authority tells a minority to turn off their n----- music they'll know they will have support if they speak out about it instead of fearing some form of retribution will derail their career.

But I like your idea that we should ignore this injustice because other injustices are ignored. Like maybe, just maybe, we should try not ignore any injustices?

Not only is it the right thing to do in firing him, but I am sure that the Flames are under huge pressure from every advertiser and corporate partner to distance themselves from Peters as soon as possible.

I have a couple of friends who are very serious about the offense they feel when the Lord's name is taken in vain. I'm not a part of the group who is offended by this, and it has taken a while to become personally aware of my own vocabulary on this issue. Devout Christians arn't easily identifiable by sight.

I see what you are saying. "Stupid" is a descriptor, and "Boomer" has been a non-offensive term since it's inception until last Tuesday at 4:34PM, when a man named Joe in Wisconsin decided that it was bad.

Using the name Jesus Christ in a way that's easily identifiable as a negative has been offensive to a number of people for well over a millenia. Religion is in the same world as the issue at hand in terms of needing to tread lightly. Christians are rather forgiving, but going to Cairo, drawing a stick figure on the side of a building and shouting "Hey, look! It's...." will give an indication of the seriousness of minimizing one's faith.

It has been a struggle for me to change my language, but once the habit is gone, I notice when exclamations are made by others. I also get if this was a stealth jab at organized religion, putting it in with the other two. This is where I make a joke about St**** Bo*****.

On with the regularly scheduled programming.

(I would add as well, in relation to Peters use of certain language, that he was very aware of not only the offense given by use of the language itself, but of who he was saying it to. A double whammy of intention.)

Maybe Peters was just singing the songs lyrics

On the serious side tho I've had to stop employees mutiple times from playing rap because of the n words in it. I've also done it tho without dropping the n word myself.

NSFW!

I suspect he was guided, by his attorneys, to apologize in this manner to put on the record what he is acknowledging and the fact it happened 10 years ago with a different team.
The apology should have ended with his offer to resign.
A friend of mine said that letter was professionally written and not by Peters. All Peters had to do was read it and sign it. Like you said it was done to protect Peters.

Well yeah that is how it should have been handled...I have done that with teams I have coached
