Bylsma was the only rookie coach who won the Cup with the Penguins.
Bob Johnson and Scotty Bowman were definitely not rookies. Sullivan coached the Bruins for a couple of seasons around the time of the lockout, then bounced around as Tortorella's assistant for a few years.

Not sure we can take star players' opinions for much vindication in these cases. If a bunch of journeyman type players rush to the defence of Darryl, it's a bit of a different story (though doesn't negate the fact that he could still be guilty of crossing the line).

I think you’ve got to give Ward a chance.
It’s clear we’re not a contending team this year, or maybe we will under the interim. I say ride it out and see if it’s really a coaching problem again. Got to give Ward a chance.

I think the only option at this point is giving Ward the rest of the season to see what he can do. The talent pool for coaches will have more options in the summer anyway. Gelinas was on the bench under Hartley so bring him back down.

Has there been a franchise worse than Calgary at picking coaches in the last decade, apart from the Oilers? A big red flag is looking at how many guys have never held a head coaching job in the NHL after a stint with Calgary, which is every one since Darryl Sutter. Treliving is just continuing this trend, hiring a completely unprepared rookie his first try, then going the other way and grabbing a hardass whose prior team hated him so much they went to the GM as a group to try to get him fired
In a sense Treliving is very lucky that his hand has been forced with regards to Peters, because if things hadn't come to light and he ended up firing him in the offseason after an abysmal season his head would have probably been next. He gets a third crack at hiring a head coach now, but I've got little optimism that he'll find the right guy after his first two spectacular failures

Getting the feeling that we could be seeing something decided before the game starts... so an actual prediction based on what I've read and really like in here:
Ward the HC (Interim)
Add Conroy to the bench
I'd be pretty stoked at that to finish the season, and nothing lost in trying this out at this point. Everyone's pretty familiar and the season wasn't going to great anyway, so an easy way to try and still build on the past couple games. All seem to be well-liked guys by the team, so try and end on a good note. Hell, maybe it makes a world of difference and Ward ends up as the great coach we keep hearing he could be.

Its pretty obvious that for whatever reason ownership doesn't feel the need to overpay for coaching. That could very well change after recent events, but while they have been fair to pay for players and in some cases management, coaching has never been given a large budget (comparatively speaking).

I actually think a GM can overthink things when it comes to hiring a head coach. That was probably the case with the Gulutzan hire. Sometimes it really is as simple as looking at a coach's record. Coaches that have experience in the NHL and have won a lot of games in the regular season and playoffs probably come with better odds of bringing success to your team than a smooth talking young coach with a lot of ideas that may or may not work. Obviously you will never hire the next great young coach if you don't give one a chance but it's just that the odds are against it working. I suspect at this point in Treliving's tenure where his job probably depends on the next hire he would be wise to interview some proven coaches that have had some success which will really depend on who's available in the offseason.

I'm thinking Boudreau in the off season if he gets let go. Haven't seen any tweets about him throwing choke holds on players or swearing at flight attendants. Looks like Sutter's are from that old school mold so they are probably out.

if they are paying peters 2 mil I think they've more than doubled what they were paying GG to make it happen.

Well apparently he has been named in the NHL Me Too movement for abuse in LA. Dont think Carcillo has said what it was exactly though.

Make it Cassie and watch CP implode.
BTW I have no problem with Cassie and her colour commentary.

To have her leave the commentating booth i would gladly do that trade off.

But still not at the $4M or so that high end coaches have been making of late.
Granted it is a step up.

A report on the LA Times expands on the Carcillo tweet noted earlier and it's not good for Sutter. Disappointed in Sutter. Zero chance the Flames bring in a guy who allegedly physically assaulted a player after the Peters stuff.
Daniel Carcillo, a former NHL enforcer who played 26 games for the Kings during the 2013-14 season, said on Twitter he saw then-coach Darryl Sutter “kick someone in the lower back on the bench.”
Added Carcillo: “What he did to Matt Greene in front of the entire room before a team meeting when he had a concussion was absurd.”

Wonder if this is part of the reason trades have been allot harder to come by this past year. Not to mention, who wouldn’t want to play for a team that was on fire like we were last season. Maybe the writing was on the wall the whole time.

Sutter would have been my choice, but yes, after reading that its highly unlikely he gets a chance here. Personally I'm disappointed to hear that, sadly not surprised at this point, but disappointed.
