I think it is stretching it to think there is some conspiracy theory where Aliu is so loyal to the team that gave him 7 NHL games over 2 seasons, that he is consulting with a few remaining members, can help the team topple an unpopular coach without the GM / player leadership having to do the dirty work, but only when it’s good for them, or whatever.. that it outweighs the basic issue we are actually looking at, that has probably burdened him for 10+ years.

I think there are going to be many dominos that will fall and not just in the NHL. I bet this type of abuse happens in all sports and in all levels. There are stories going around on Twitter about The Sutters, Keenan, and Laviolette. Who’s next? #MyCoachToo?

I actually figured we’d hear about Torts or Keenan eventually but I’m not seeing anything yet. Link to Keenan talk?

Keenan's last team he coached was Calgary in 2009. I recall hearing that he was no longer Iron Mike at that time. There was about 3 or 4 years between him coaching Calgary and Florida. Most of the players back then were from a different era and way of dealing with things and not very likely to speak up. Especially those during Keenan's peak years.

Mike Commodore was really a trail blazer in terms of speaking up in the hockey community. Even now a lot of players won't speak up. What we're seeing this week is somewhat remarkable for hockey players.

Yes that’s great but the comment I replied to mentioned that there are Keenan stories going around. I’ve also seen them referenced on twitter but can’t seem to find them.

Oh for #### sakes. Being yelled at or called names by your hockey coach is no where close to sexual abuse, it's a total slap in the face to those who HAVE had to deal with coming out about such things to compare the two. Ugh.

This might be the dumbest thing I've read. Nobody is saying that conducting proper process is condoning the behavior. Literally, nobody.

Yeah, he's really doing a tremendous job of playing Draisaitl and McDavid for half the games while praying hard and holding on for dear life for the other half.

On a more serious note though, Tippett has voiced the need to have a good relationship with his players on numerous occations, so I have a hard time seeing why he would get dragged into this.

I'm just discussing for the sake of discussing, but I think it's more like "Peters is racist, but I don't know to which degree".

I don't think someone plays that card without being racist.

Or perhaps a bit differently, do you Akim holds back if the flames chemistry is perfect and team is first in the conference?. Not out of any love for Peters, but out of respect for the players playing under him?

I understand the why now is because of the whole "#metoo" thing happening in hockey last few days. But I wonder if a secondary reason is because Peters was the cancer in the dressing room.
I think the obvious thing in play here is Aliu's career is coming to a close and he has nothing left to lose by telling his story. He's disappointed in how his career arch developed and there is likely some lashing out going on, with some possible ulterior motives. The Babcock firing and commentary has likely made him feel he's in a place to make his statements and take a run at a coach with which he has an axe to grind. I get his motives, and support his comments, so long as he doesn't try to monetize them. This is ultimately where things will fall out IMO. What chain reaction does this start, and how many reputations will this sully.

Keep an eye on a guy like Daniel Carcillo. He's throwing a lot of stuff at the wall right now and hoping something will stick. The dog pile is just starting and there will be a certain element that will hope to make something out of this mess. Whether it be immediate money to get shut up, or fame to rally into a job in some money down the line, there is going to be an element that we need to approach with a high degree of skepticism.

Back to the Flames situation, it is obvious that Peters needs to go, but I am still concerned about how this is going to play out for the team. Unless they have a rock solid morality clause that covers actions from previous employers, which is highly unlikely, the Flames are going to have to pay a substantial settlement to Peters to make him go away. Peters is pretty much done in hockey and he's going to want every cent he can milk out of this gig. Even though the Flames have little to no responsibility in this, they are ending Peters' career and they will be the target of his lawsuit. I'm glad they are taking their time on this, as they need to get this right. This is going to be the standard that used in dealing with this type of thing going forward and how this will be remembered years to come. I wish it weren't the Flames caught in the middle of this.

Why shouldn’t he monetize it?

Peters right now is trying to monetize his dismissal. This idea that victims need to be selfless and noble is wrong. Aliu should extract what he can out of this situation. While I agree that monetary incentive does cause credibility to be questioned the victims should approach it in a manner they want to. If that’s being paid to keep quiet that’s fine, if that is shedding light on it for the public that’s fine to.

We don’t get to decide how a victim should behave.

Both of these threads have involved a number of people trying to outstupid their predecessors.

And you're right. Every single commentator who has spoken about it has said the Flames are handling it the right way. Even NBCSN, who dedicated a bunch of time to the issue during both intermissions in the Hawks-Stars game last night.

If people want to see a team doing it the wrong way, look to the Houston Astros, whose sexist and misogynistic assistant GM tried to intimidate a female reporter by praising domestic abusers, in front of other reporters. The team first tried to say she made it up, and after other reporters backed her up, they were silent, then tried a half-assed apology, and then grudgingly fired him. They didn't take it seriously at all until they realized that the firestorm of criticism wasn't going to stop. The Flames, on the other hand, have taken this seriously and with sincerity from the moment Aliu made his accusation.
