You think he did and hired him anyway? He knew he was a bit of a hard ass sure, but everything else?
The one thing I can definitely say in all of this so far is how impressed I am with how quickly and professionally Treliving is handling all of this.

Well he obviously knew of some examples. Peters was pretty harsh to Lack in a televised interview which was widely circulated at the time
But there’s a huge leap between that and what was done to Aliu. Can’t fathom that kind of stuff was anywhere near the radar when the hiring was made

Not referring to the racism, but more about how much players hated playing for him. Treliving MUST have known about this.

It would've been a big reason he was hired.
Illustrates how treliving views the game.

In my albeit limit exposure to competitive hockey, I would say that a coach who is not perceived as an ####### by a large section of their former players is rare. Coaches play favourites, they berate bad play, and love making public examples of players they don't like. Over and above that they like to scream and yell and kick garbage cans. All this is 'normal'. What isn't normal is racism, this goes over and above what most players experience.

There's no way he would hire him knowing any of this.
However, the fact that he didn't do a thorough enough vetting of Peters through previous player interactions is very telling.
There could be a fatal flaw in Treliving's decision making process exposed here. Some of this (very little) should blow back on him for not looking into Peters' background more.

It was probably a knee jerk reaction to the fact that GG was viewed as too soft, and a 'good guy'.

This is where I am. It's also true about at least one player signing, or so I've heard.

Not really. Treliving's first hire was a player's coach in Gulutzan. Which was an unmitigated disaster. I agree that Peters being a hard ass would be a big reason why Treliving hired him, but it seems more likely to be a pragmatic decision of "this didn't work, so lets go with that" than an idea of this being how Treliving also thinks.

Don't think Treliving should really be singled out for his coaching hire process that resulted in a coach with suspect history that may be a few isolated incidents.
Toronto hired Babcock, and how many other teams have hired coaches with similar traits?
Could/should be a league wide consideration.

A little blowback?
Man, low bar.
His second coaching hire has turned the organization into a sideshow circus and perhaps put his organization into legal jeopardy.
His targeted hire that he bragged about to season ticket holders. Hired basically on his personal endorsement...

Citation please.
Again, I'm saying he bears some responsibility for this situation, but it's Peters who committed the fouls here, not Treliving. By all accounts Treliving is a stand up professional. However, he didn't do a good enough job on this hire, full stop. For that there needs to be some accountability from him.

Has anyone who played under Peters stepped out to defend him? A number have now come out against him with accusations. Haven't heard anyone defend him yet.

^What legal jeopardy? That continues to get tossed out with no basis.

You'd have to be pretty dumb to stick your neck out and defend the guy right now.

GG was a softie disciple of Babcock (liked his systems etc). Peters is a hardass disciple of Babcock. I think Treliving wanted a guy who used Babcock's systems, got GG, found him too soft, then got Peters - same thing only more of a "traditional coach".
I suspect the worst you'd have heard from someone during that process was "he's tough" or "he's a jerk".
When things are going well those things are overlooked, even by the players (see Hartley, Bob). When the going gets tough, an a-hole coach is probably not appreciated (see also Hartley, Bob).

Based on the hires of gulutzan and then Peter's, do you have faith treliving's third time up to bat is going to be a home run? I sure don't.

There's nothing to defend at this point, the allegation has been confirmed independently
