Well, it is grounds for termination, not to mention the fact they can let him go whenever they want.
Not only was it racist language, directed at a black player, he had the opportunity at the time to own it, apologize and make up for it, and he doubled down. As a 45 year old person in a position of authority he couldn't even manage the situation correctly. I don't have a lot of faith much has changed since.

Because hockey is a closed society where pissing off the wrong guy at the wrong time means your hopes and dreams for 15+ years can be dashed in an instant, along with millions of potential dollars in career earnings.
Because there is no public accountability for leagues that would be financially unprofitable without massive public subsidy.
Because sports are used to co-opt national identities to achieve mythical, unassailable status.

I would hope so, even if that scenario had happened, I'd want BT to find a way to let Peters go and try and learn to be a better person in his retirement.

Treliving might say that but it wouldn't be true it would be cover for "working out termination deal". As to the latter, I really don't know but it would be difficult. The doubts about his character would remain, since the apology only came when he was caught. He didn't apologize at the time - he doubled down.
Had he done it at the time, even if Aliu didn't accept it (which he probably would have), he would be in a far far better position. I doubt he'd be fired then, and he'd be way better off now.

Treliving says "this subject matter has no place in our organization" which all but confirms he's gone.

Actions have consequences. Unless Peter is clearly able to demonstrate how he has changed as a person over the last 10 years then it is grounds for dismissal. There have been examples where people have said things in the past that were socially acceptable but is no longer acceptable today but have shown they are different people and did not lose their job (or got cancelled). Kevin Hart comes to mind.
I don't know what you mean by bad business either. It's actually good business not to alienate your fan base keeping a guy who many think are racist.

At the expense of the team & league brand?
Here's what's going to happen;
He'll get fired, publicly. The flames marketing machine will share they have zero tolerance. There will be an NHL anti-racism campaign.
Shamed Peters will briefly apologize, share he has growing to do, and quietly go in the night. He'll go on "sabbatical" for 3 years, and will have an ok severance.

i think you misunderstand my position, I want Peters gone regardless of whether he is contrite and his apologies were accepted.

How about the other Fbomb that rhymes with maggot? I'm sure that has been said a million times on the ice.

Ok, to contrast what I said originally you're asking for Treviling to offer empathy in Peters exit?
How about you clarify your ambiguity?

God, what a surprise.
That piece of #### Bob Marjonovic on TSN 1040 is now attempting to sell this narrative that this could have been an isolated incident. He openly wonders why Aliu took so long to come forward with his allegations.
For added context, this is the same guy who consistently goes out of his way to slag PK Subban on the air at every opportunity.

I suspect that, as someone else said, the only delay in the official announcement is finalizing how he gets fired. Meaning...they are probably making sure they can fire him, with cause, in a way where he doesn't get paid further.

Yes that's homophobic and hockey still has a long long way to go in that regard (and general LGBTQ acceptance within the sport).
Who even uses that as an insult these days? It's pretty damn immature.

IANAL, but I think he may still be compensated. Reduced, but still.
