Alright then, sure.
The second line is significantly more offensive.

What don't you get that the N word is not to be used in a professional work environment?

It doesn't have to be directed at anyone, and it kind of passively was anyway.
Not going to act like Flash Walken did, I think his response was childish, but you seem pretty misguided on all of this.

b. Good on Dowling.
c. Peters was a 45 year old guy at the time I think. Not a kid. And it wasn't even provoked by a loss of temper - he walks in, drops the bomb, walks out. Doesn't apologize after for a loss of control, doesn't offer any ignorance defence.
He's done.
|
Exactly ... this wasn't done in college. Very little excuse if it was, but he was a grown man ten or 11 years ago.
I saw no reason Aliu would make this up, looks like it's been corroborated.
He resigns today.

I can't see him ever coaching for the Flames again.
Hire Darryl Sutter for one year. Win Cup. Find new coach in off-season.

It may still take the Flames a little time to conclude the investigation (though I would be surprised if it tool longer than another 24 hours), but I think the writing is just about on the wall at this point. Stunning how quickly it has all happened.

I would like to believe that in ten years a person can change. That said there is no way to prove something like that even if it were the case.

The first line is what's going to get him fired. If it was only the second line he could argue that he was quoting the song, even trying to stop the playing of music with the word because it was inappropriate.

I don't think the Flames give him a chance to resign.
If Hanlon knows what he's doing, the Flames need to be seen to treat this as zero tolerance.
You fire an employee like that, you don't let them leave on their own accord.

He's probably done. It took John Vanbiesbrouck 15 years to get back in the game.

He’s done, he doesn’t get to stain a proud organization with his past behavior if true.

The key circumstance, in my opinion, is the position of trust and authority that Peters was in at the time. That position demanded a far higher standard than children on a playground (or whatever other hypothetical situations have been raised so far in this thread).

Yeah, even if that phrase is somehow in your vocabulary, a black guy is playing the music and you still let loose? It was not even passive IMO. It was directed at Aliu.
I think he did it because he thought he could get away with it as coach, and he did, for years.

Yeah, I can't believe anyone would have issue with the first line. As you said it's totally fine a white man yelling the N word at a black man who's under his authority. If we keep catering into the PC crowd, soon we won't be able to wear our Ku Klux Klan robes to work on casual Friday.

@EricFrancis
After touching base with various stakeholders in this ugly situation, I can no longer see any scenario in which Bill Peters remains coach of the Flames.
