1. If this is true then Peters is a idiot and needs to go.
2. If this is true while on earth wait 10 years to say something. I will never understand peoples decision to not say something at the time.
I don’t understand why people are surprised at number 2. He is in an ultra competitive enviroment where a tight knit group of decision makers control your future. Why would you ever jeaprodize that.

It’s a mind field out there, particularly for white males.
nm. you were already called out on it.
I can't believe posters seem to be thinking it could be made up accusation and talking about the character of the accuser.
I just think that the babcock thing make him feel empowered to finally speak up.
I'm not a person of colour, but I've had things said to me by a person in authority that 30 years later have stuck with me.
for Aliu, racial comments have to be that times 10.
I've been in locker rooms when younger and know the type of talk that occurs. it's pretty raw. doesn't make it ok, though. the locker room culture likely has changed a lot, but probably still needs to evolve.
for Peters, I don't care if he gets fired. if it's true, then the public shame is his punishment. his flames career is likely done if this is true, though. public outrage will see to that.
don't know the man, so don't know if he is rascist, but likely at the very least an insensitive asshat in the babcock vein.

If this is true and Twitter was around in 2008, Peter's career would have ended right then - as 2008 Akim would likely have had something to say then if he had the megaphone
But I stood up to my Director at work, and was fired for it. He went 2 weeks later, so youppi - but everyone involved knew it was going to cost me my job. If this was a job I really wanted, I might have stayed silent.
Wow, bold statement. You are calling out all the victims who are late to report the crimes. Like all the women that got abused by Harvey Weinstein, like Sheldon Kennedy, like Theo Fleury, and the list goes on. Maybe try to imagine yourself in their shoes, and have a little bit of empathy.

Pretty sure having the most highly touted coach publicly shamed for being an absolute jerk is absolutely going to help others speak out.
Get these dinosaurs out of here. If this is their best way to be a leader/manager, they have no reason to hold a position at the top levels, or even peewee for that matter.
I don’t think Peters should be fired for this, but his apology is going to have to be pretty good for this not to be the beginning of the end. This is a career-altering allegation even if he does keep his job right now.
Let’s not forget that nobody is perfect. Even the nicest coach has some skeletons in his/her closet. And in 10 years, something someone said will also come across as phobic. Maybe he didn’t know it was wrong to say it. People get comfortable around each other and say dumb stuff all the time. I’m guilty of calling my old coworkers Fag. I’ll admit it, but it wasn’t meant in a hateful way, it’s jus how teens and young adults acted in the 90’s.

The n word has been culturally considered unacceptable for how many years now? An adult calling a teenager that 10 years ago is absolutely horrid, if true.

So imagine if what Snuffleupagus suggested was closer to what actually happened than it's being made out to be
Imagine if Peters had enough of listening to the N-word repeatedly at full blast in his dressing room after games. Imagine if he was so offended by hearing it that he wanted it out of his dressing room. Imagine, if Peters' misunderstood the meaning of the term "N-word music", and imagine if what Peters meant to say was "I don't want to hear that word spoken in my dressing room ever again" - and in doing so used the word himself
Imagine if Akim is referring to one instance, and imagine if 2008 Akim took that one instance and made Peter's life hell over it. He's right in doing so, that's a lesson Peters should have known by 43 - but imagine if that was the one and only time Peters had used that term.
There's a ton of room to interpret what that 3 Tweet mess blurted out, as I've learned this morning

Estimating this was 11 years ago, how far back in history can we go to have someone fired? There’s words today that are no longer acceptable but we’re common place in society not too long ago. In Billy Peters 40 plus years in hockey this no doubt in my mind he has used words that by today’s standards would be considered hate speech, racist, homophobic etc.... The fact that people are called for his firing based on WORDS used 11 years ago......
As for burying Aliu in the ECHL, this happens at every level of hockey above AA Bantam. Kids/ parents who kiss the coaches ass always get preferential treatment over those who rebel against the coach, nothing new here.

Fair enough. I just don't find any context where that word is acceptable to say.
