I could be wrong, but I don’t think Cherry necessarily made it a “white” thing. It could be. But I’m reading the issue was new immigrants (who are obviously largely non-white). It’s different. Bad but different.
Leave it to Pete to extrapolate for us All and to tell us how to interpret this.

Again, Cherry was complaining about what he said he saw. How does he know the people he complains about are immigrants? What possible difference could he have noticed?
I get where it seems his comments might be thinly veiled racism, but I see 2 problems.
- he has a long history of discrimination against groups of whites as well; French, Swedes, Russians. His discrimination against groups of whites has a far longer and more defined history than his discrimination against groups of another skin colour. So it seems it isn’t an issue of whites being better than visible minorities, is is more Canadians being better than just about anyone else.
-his comments in this case are about new immigrants, which, admittedly, are mostly visible minorities. Except that is there an indication that he has an issue with all people of colour? It looks like his issue is with people who aren’t Canadian enough (in his mind), regardless of skin colour.
There is substantial evidence that he is an judgemental idiot, not sure if we can conclude that he is a racist though.

Because he is a Canadian icon, successful coach, ambassador for the national sport, unabashedly patriotic, while also being an outspoken advocate for veterans, first responders, the people who put their lives on the line every day for their fellow citizens?
His body of work spans decades, not just a few seconds yesterday evening.
We’re all aware of his body of work. He’s a charlatan.
He pumps oversimplified rhetoric to immensely complex issues & trivializes what is most sacred. Minimizing trauma for all.
What was his stance at the start of the Iraq war? If you want to go back in time.
He’s an outspoken advocate when it aligns with his own simplistic world view.
When it comes to the harsh realities & utter horror of war or service to others in trauma he’s all for the jingoism.
Where is his advocation for mental health or brain trauma?
That’s the point of honouring sacrifice.
It’s that trauma we avoided or had lessoned by the sacrifice & work of others.
Good riddance to his egotistic sideshow using the military as his prop.
I don't think he should be fired or anything, I can't stand the new thing where any time someone says something you don't agree with they need to lose their job.
But that doesn't mean it's okay to just single out immigrants for not respecting remembrance day. There's plenty of people born here that disregard it too
This is my take as well.

I hear you. Cherry for sure thinks that. But I’m not sure if Cherry thinks all war vets were white, and further, I’m not sure that he doesn’t view all war vets, regardless of background, as war hero’s, etc.
I’m just not a fan of Pete taking a view that DC doesn’t respect non-white hero’s with “The notion that they were all white is not only dangerously wrong, it's an insult to those thousands who lie in the ground ”.
That’s how I read his take anyway. Sounds like I’m apologizing for Cherry which isn’t the case. Cherry said plenty enough wrong. I just didn’t need Pete riding to the rescue to pile on.
So the process for a few people here is to agree that he definitely meant something that he didn’t specifically say, and then to get outraged at him about the result of your own inference?
Come on. Do you think he was questioning people who weren't wearing poppies to determine if they were immigrant or not?
If somebody said, "I hate it whenever I see an immigrant without a poppy", how would you understand that the person knew they were immigrants or not?
Oh, sure, I guess he could have happened upon a meeting of Irish-Canadian immigrants and noticed the lack of poppies. That's probably what happened.
I’d be interested to re-watch the complete Coach’s Corner, due to all the hubbub, but it has been taken down.
I don’t recall the specific “I walked in to (place x) and saw (x number of) (description of people) , etc.” that you guys are referring to.
I think he probably didn’t see as many poppies in general wherever he was, wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for veterans, as he always does. He also has in the past encouraged everyone to get poppies based on what they represent and where the proceeds go. This time he used the stick not carrot. I’m pretty sure something came out wrong.
Now let me ask you this. Do you think he went to the studio, thinking, “Remembrance day is coming up. I really want to take a swipe at visible minorities, not so badly that I will mention them explicitly, but boy, what a great opportunity. Let’s go!”?
I think they'll give him the "option" of retiring immediately. He's too much of a loose cannon to get a final show.
They can’t put him on without an apology
And I don’t know that he’s willing to do that
The only quote from him today was telling s columnist “I’ve had my say”

A lot of this should be weighed against the fact he's 85 years old. The man was born in 1934, my Grandfather was from the prior generation and I remember he had some horribly dated opinions about everything.
I haven't watched Coaches Corner with any real interest since I was a kid, and it's been evident for at least 5 years he had lost the thread. In the past he probably knew better than to make waves but he's likely not playing with a full deck anymore.
It always better to leave before you possibly taint your legacy. He feels like someone that just hasn't known when to bid farewell.

Then why not just say, "hey, I have been out there, not seeing a lot of poppies, come on people, show respect!"?

I don’t care what he planned to say on the way to the studio. It matters what he said. And if he somehow misspoke, he has had plenty of time to say so and apologize. Singling out immigrants for his commentary around wearing poppies is not defensible.
Personally I have a soft spot for Cherry but I have no tolerance for these types of comments. Using the bully pulpit to spread intolerance is shameful and it seems he just isn’t sharp enough anymore to have a regular TV spot.

You're giving him credit for a level of self awareness that frankly I'm not sure he's capable of.

He said he talked to a veteran who was collecting poppy donations in Mississauga and downtown Toronto and according to him, very few were wearing poppies.
Here’s the best unedited continuous clip from coaches corner I could find
