You’re absolutely right it’s much more than a few seconds. He’s been a racist and a bigot and has shared those views, without shame, for decades. I’m glad his body of work is finally catching up to him.

Well, maybe you should look that word up, and show everyone where he said his race is superior to any others, in particular or in general.

Half the posters here who are outraged/offended by Cherry also say they stopped/don't watch him. Why even bother being offended/outraged? You've already voted with your feet and your remotes. If others agree, they'll do the same and the ratings will run their course. I've never been a fan of Cherry's, either. And don't watch or care about this nonsense.

His body of work includes an established pattern of hateful and prejudice statements.
This is nothing new.

Ok but if we're judging his worth as a Canadian on his hockey prowess, how did he ever place above Gretzky? Just a weird ranking. And his advocacy has been very checkered and excessively, aggressively nationalist. He's a climate denier who expressed support for Donald Trump and has said these types of things for decades... remember when he called out French players for wearing visors? And said all these things on national TV while being paid handsomely to share his opinions?

It’s funny that it’s being cited as racist as that has nothing to do with being an immigrant. Many immigrants are of the same “race” as Cherry himself.
Then on the flip side. I can almost garauntee you what he really meant was visible minorities many of whom are not even immigrants. Would Don have a point that there is a drop off in visible minorities wearing poppies? Yeah probably. I’d say there’s a real lack of poppies over all though and I don’t think coaches corner is the time or place for that discussion.
That being said I think the reaction is a bit over the top. Is it a bad take. Yeah. Do we all need to cover our ears and pretend we heard some unspeakable evil? Probably not either.

What I agree with was that when Cherry said immigrant he meant visible minority. Which brings race into it.

Yeah. I mean if I were a guessing man that’s what I would assume. However going based off his words it’s an assumption we can’t really make. So is it a poor taste in his comments? Yup. Is it racial? Not at all based off his words and not assuming his intent.
Don has a point. And it can be made with more then just visible minorities. It could even be a good discussion to have at some point to better educate current Canadians and future Canadians on why we wear poppies and what it means to some people. I just don’t see who this hurts enough to have all the outrage.

Let’s not pretend Cherry was including British/American/Australian immigrants in his rant. Those nations were involved the wars as much as Canada was after all. Cherry knew exactly which groups he meant when he said “you people” and it’s pretty much as racist as you can get
I also don’t know where Cherry is basing his beliefs that immigrants weren’t contributing to veteran charities. He just wanted to sound off on visible minorities

I would like to know how he is assuming who is likely an immigrant if not by appearance.

Some mental gymnastics here for people to claim he was talking about immigration and not race. The last time there was a wave of white European immigrants was what during world war 1 and 2? The fact of the matter is immigration since 1970 has been overwhelmingly visible minorities.
Do you think he's referring to white immigrants when he says you people? It's funny that people who are hiding behind immigration and not race argument seems to think racism is can only be in the form of "I hate x people". As if people need to explicitly say they don't like a certain people to be racist.
I like Cherry for the most part. I don't know if he is racist. However, what he said was definitely racist.

Immigrants buy poppies. They use it to represent their own wars too.
So Cherry isn't racist, hes just wrong.
And if veterans want people to buy poppies then MAKE BETTER POPPIES!

He specifically said "people living in smaller cities".
He's not assuming everyone who is Asian is an immigrant.
He's assuming everyone who lives in Markham or Surrey is an immigrant.
Which is fair.
