The bigger problem now is that Lucic knows he cant do this any more, other teams know he cant do this any more, so what the hell can he provide this team with for 5.25 million a year until 2023?
You could never coldcock someone in the NHL.
I'm going to venture a guess that this really won't affect the way he plays the game at all, much in the same way it hasn't for other players like him.

I 100% agree with Treliving's comments. This was not a 'sucker punch'. I don't see anything wrong with this. Sherwood was running around all night, and then did what any other player that is trying to get something started did - jab and poke at the goalie. That ALWAYS (at least it SHOULD always) spark a reaction from the other team.
Good on Lucic for sticking up twice now for this team when the opposing players thought they could get away with something. The Flames are still too soft for my liking (that hit on Kylington should have prompted an instant response in my book, for instance).
Anyway, stuff like this just brings the team closer together and motivates them anyway. I don't have a problem with the incident, 2 games seems to me to be 2 games too many, but whatever.

Flames GM Brad Treliving on two-game suspension for Milan Lucic: “I have the utmost respect for George Parros and the Department of Player Safety. They do a great job. But on this one, we vehemently disagree.”
- But why? - says Parros genuinely surprised by Treliving's reaction...

That was totally a sucker punch. Came flying in from nowhere and launched. Take the homer glasses off for a second. Again, awesome he did it, bad execution.

It's obviously not clean, but a sucker punch is by definition "without warning and often without apparent provocation".
Call it a cheapshot or whatever, but I don't think it fits the suckerpunch definition.

You think he is OK with not getting paid while being suspended? I'm gonna guess that is not the case.
This wasn't a 2 game suspension offense at all. He has done this, literally, hundreds of times in his career without punishment other than the on-ice call which is how it should be.
Im guessing the next time two guys stare at each other and one decides its go time, when he lands the first punch it wont be a blip on the radar anywhere around the league. That's all that happened here, only Sherwood was to stupid to understand who he was face to face with. Lucic got this cause he is bigger and stronger than almost anyone else.
The entire thing is absurd and why the "wheel of justice" catchphrase exists. The league has become a joke in this department.

I dont think you understand what a sucker punch means if thats what you thought that was.
It wasnt from behind or out of view, it wasnt like there was no precursor to the flare up and it was not unexpected that a retaliation was about to take place for actions initiated by Sherwood. Like, if he thought he could jab the G like that and skate away without answering for it...what game has he been playing his whole life?
I would agree a long suspension would be in order had this been a punch from behind or whatever....but this stuff happens in every single NHL game ever played to varying degrees. Has for as long as I have been watching which is a half century worth. Its absurd and has absolutely nothing to do with "homer glasses". It was a punch...it was called on ice properly as roughing...thats what 99% of all roughing calls are...punches...to another player....simple.

Personally, I'm glad Lucic went after Sherwood for sticking Rittich. That said he was definitely over zealous with a punch to the face, if you want to fight then then drop the gloves and go at it.
I like when teammates stand up for each other. Teams have been going after Rittich a little bit lately. If you do nothing teams will keep doing it. We needed more of this when teams started slashing Gaudreau away from the play a few years ago.
Let's also not pretend like Sherwood is innocent in all of this. What Lucic did was wrong, and whether it is suspension worthy is debatable, but I also felt Sherwood was running around a little bit in this game too.
Young guy who plays hard and is trying to make an impression, he's also riding a line. He had a hit on Kylington early in the first that could have been a boarding call as he got Kylington right in the numbers, but the refs miss the call and the result is Sherwood likely has a but of a target on his back. A few more big hits, albeit more clean, and then giving Rittich a stick and Lucic decides enough is enough and plays his role and steps up. I'm sure there was a little frustration in there too with the turnover, but hockey's an emotional game.
I thought there was another play where Mangiapane got hit right in the numbers and went head first into the boards and I thought that was Sherwood too, but I've yet to re-watch the game so I can't be 100% on that.
Plays like this happen lots in almost every game and never warrant more than an on ice penalty, of which Lucic got 2.
I have no problems with Lucic stepping up and letting the other team know that stuff like that isn't going to fly. It's his job. He should ride the line a little better but it is what it is.
He will sit for 2 and we move on with life.
Although the outcry will be amazing when this happens in another game and the NHL doesn't even look at it.

Yes he can... he just needs to do it differently.
Pick the guy up by the scruff and slam him up against the glass. Two minute roughing penalty, message delivered.

Ok the sky is falling for you again.
Lucic has a “particular set of skills” and he has been in the league for 10 years, I do not see a problem here and regular service will continue.

I corrected myself, not sucker punch, cheapshot. And it doesnt matter. He got two games because it was excessive. It's done with. I thought hed get a game at most.
And yes, homer glasses do apply here. Lucic did that as an Oiler flames fans would be calling for a Spanish inquisition.
Meh, we all have hills to die on, this one isnt mine, feels like it's yours. Let's watch the Caps game about it.
I agree with Lucic's decision to mess up someone's day after some moron decides to poke the goalie after a whistle. It'll cause teams to think about it before the next time because there's a large bodied maniac in red out there who doesn't seem to care about getting suspended.
Also, I also agree with the suspension. It'll cause players to think about acting like a maniac before straight up drilling someone in the mouth.
Checks and balances. I don't mind how any of this played out.

Well, as just one example, he can save Hamonic from stepping in above his weight class and getting his cheek bone broken.
See for example, him stepping up to fight thr goon the kings called up, presumably to intimidate Tkachuk, earlier this season...
