I honestly can understand where Monahan is coming from with his reaction. You can see his head movement the whole time, and where he is looking as it happens
Sees it happen, is already coasting towards the fracas. Sees Rasmus going to town on Lowry. Looks to his left, Bennett is already piling in. Now looks to his right where Kulikov is standing on top of Kylington, NOT stoking the fire and appears to just be trying to stay standing so he doesn't fall on Kylington. In that same second, see Rittich skating towards Kylington to protect him. Notice how Rittich doesn't go to town on Kulikov? Because Kulikov is doing nothing to Kylington, or to stoke the flames. Monahan would have been the 4th guy in, risking falling or causing a guy to fall on Kylington, as Rasmus is already on top of Lowry with Bennett shortly behind. Kulikov is already taken care of by Rittich.
Honestly, as soft as Monahan is sometimes, I think he's also an extremely measured and mature player, who has a more calming approach to the game. I've made a comment prior that it puzzles me that he doesn't have that bite, coming from competitive lacrosse. But I'll take Monahan for how he is, how he plays, and what he brings to the table, then someone who recklessly drives in. Leave it to Bennett to do that stuff, as Monahan is our PPG player. Any comparison to Iggy running in and causing hell is like comparing apples and oranges. All the after the whistle stuff doesn't light a fire under Monahan like it does to Iggy or Bennett etc.
I know when I play (and yes, I played only minor hockey and still beer league), that when I was younger and more hot headed, I would relish the after whistle stuff. I'd be the first guy to go to town on a guy. Now, once a whistle goes and a scrum happens, I'm more just trying to split guys up and tell everybody to calm down. I think Monahan has always been a more tempered and mature person, and absolutely deserves to be wearing a letter. You don't need to be an emotional heart and soul guy to wear a letter.
I will say though, the past few games, Monahan seems to have brought some physicality to his game, which I do like. It's all during play though, which is perfectly fine. Do you ever see anybody try to get under Monahan's skin? I really doubt he's affected much by trash talking and after the whistle scrums.

So, no 5 minute major call, which might have helped the Flames win the game.
Then, Lowry gets a 2 game suspension, which helps Anaheim & San Jose as that is who Winnipeg plays next.
What a bush league.

The ref should have been suspended for 2 games as well.

It is easy to want to see him do something but everyone is made up differently. While the majority of players have their wires cross when they see something like that, Monahan on the ice resembles Monahan off the ice. Calculated and very simple.
It is tough to fault him for who he is and we have known for a while that he isnt the first one into a scrum. Playing with Johny as much as he has and the shots Johny takes is enough to tell us that Monahan is out there to play hockey and has no interest in the other side of the game.
I would love to see him as the first one in on a play like that but am not surprised at the outcome. I'll sooner judge him for performing poorly in the face off dot or poor point production than I will on jumping into a play on a dirty hit.
Personally, him wearing an A is what he should have. The C should be reserved for someone who is engaged in all aspects, whether it is between whistles, during the play or off the ice. That is what makes Gio a great captain and why Tkachuk will make for a great next captain.

As has already been mentioned, suspensions aren't about rewarding the wronged team. They are about punishing the offending player.
Not giving a 5-minute major was clearly a mistake by the ref. This suspension validates that, but they can't change it after the fact.

This is an ongoing problem in the NHL.

Tell us all what you would have done? Pretty sure it was nothing, the same as all the Flames players on the ice did.

In fact, I was worried, given they only handed 2 for the initial hit, that Rasmus was going to even it up.
