Here's a question. Would the Americans risk jeopardizing their relationship with Canada if a separatist party came into power in Alberta and starting appealing for American statehood? I mean it's not like Canada can do anything about it.

I still really like Lisa Raitt. Really classy comments in defeat.

Funny that the CBC panel only seem really concerned about Liberal rep in Alberta yet they are in essentially an equally bad position in BC and all of Western Canada. This minority will be a make or break for Western relations and the future of the Liberal party out here.

Andrew Coyne put it pretty well I think, if the conservatives don’t start looking past its base, it will have a hard time winning. Alberta is a shoe-in, Sask is a shoe in, but to win you need to start appealing to more than just the base. There’s a bubble in Alberta, outside of it nobody really cares about the oil patch.
People care about climate change, LGTBQ rights, abortion rights, fair taxes for the middle class, less tax breaks for big business, yet the conservative platform cling to those ideas. That’s not going to fly with the left/Centre left, so you won’t get those votes.
|
If the conservatives came out with a platform that did something about climate change, unequivocally supported LGBTQ and practiced responsible spending AND taxation (because they are a necessary evil) they would win. But they don’t.

She must be seething inside. I wonder if she is angrier at Scheer or Ford?

Yup she's a big loss and a huge centrist piece of the party. Hopefully she finds a way back.

Sure because at that point there wouldn't be a canda anymore. There'd be the country of Ontario.

Scoring Winger

Conservatives are winning the popular vote across Canada right now but lost the election just like the Dems who won the popular vote lost to the Republicans.
Looks like our system works as well as the American system.

I thought the same, actually felt a bit pandering and leading. If you couldn't see it, you'd think it was just AB/Sask. The entire west is a pretty big deal beyond Albertans being afraid to identify as liberals

But be honest, if you say you are pro life or for traditional marriage the mob will come for you.

The issue is that politicians run, both explicitly and tacitly, on these issues, and court such voters because they say they will do things about them, to “protect family values”. Scheer said what he believed, that’s fine. But he failed to shut down any discussion of legislation about social issues. That contradicts your views, I think.

We largely (North America) created the industry in China and by extension pollution. That doesn't absolve them from responsibility of course but at the price points we want to buy our crap industry in China can't be clean. I can buy a box full of electronic components for $20 same thing made here would be $200 or more. I know this because at one time the stuff was made here and it was expensive.

That said, I think we can all agree that religion, and religious institutions, have no place in government and need to be weeded out and left behind as quick as possible. Separate church and state.

Agreed. We have a large population, it shouldn’t be *that* difficult to find 338 adults who are socially progressive that don’t have a ugly Twitter history.

I feel what you're missing is there is nothing Scheer could have said to quell the criticism, the attack point is being used for the sake of it.
