Knights 6 Flames 2

- Not a great Rittich night (iffy on 4/6)
- Rest of team wasn't great either
- liked the 2nd PP unit
- Fleury was a beast

He would get claimed by the last place team and score 4 goals in his first game...we all know it

Give him 30 minutes a night for an extended stretch of games and see what you've got.

I think a lot of it is between the ears for Bennett, he might do better with extended looks on the top 2 lines instead of a quick demotion. He was feeling good and excited before he took the bad penalty against the AVS. Johnny could make the same mistake and still be on the top line. For some players confidence can factor in.

I feel like the ability to breakout of your own zone vs apply a forecheck to disrupt/slowdown the opposition breakout is equivalent to the game within a game element of the offense vs defence lines in football.

The high skill players get the accolades, but it's usually a won line battle that results in a big football play. Just like how an nhl team looks 'fast' and generates tremendous scoring chances off the rush due to strong transition.

Flames were tremendous at transition/breaking out last year. They have been garbage so far this year. That may have something to do with rust and as poor start, but it also could be a lot of team scouting the avs playoff series, as colorado completely suffocated the flames breakout and transition game.

Peters has to be able to adapt.

Obviously I’m no coach but why doesn’t CGY have the centres come back deep and just make that first pass a short one to the middle? Give the d an easy option to relieve any forecheck pressure.

Use those short passes (even if you have to go back to the d) to breakdown the opponent, get in rhythm and get the offense on time and on track.

CGY were getting nothing off the chip in off the long pass from the d. They are not helping each other. Get closer.

I am just saying confidence can be an issue for some players. If Johnny got demoted he might have confidence issues too. I understand though Johnny needs to be in situations with talented players.

The confidence of defenceman in having a goalie who was making it his mission to get them the puck in advanced positions to make the breakout quicker and cleaner, and as an added result, not having them take as many hits going into the corners, cannot be understated. Even when Rittich wa in last year, other teams played the forecheck of the Flames a bit different as well.

Now, going back to a conventional goalie now, other teams aren’t game planning for a guy like Smith, and it’s an adjustment for Flames defenseman and forwards to win an extra puck battle and the. be in different postions for a decent (and slower) breakout.

I will reiterate. Confidence is acquired and ameliorated by doing things right...over and over again. Confidence is paramount for ALL players.

Mental preparation, including mental rehearsal, mental imagery and self talk are major pregame components in being a successful professional and doing things right on the ice.

Dude, the season is 5 games deep. Neal is on pace for 115 goals, the Oilers are still in the playoff seedlings.

He was our best skater last year in the only 5 games that actually mattered
