This year there were only 2 claims, which isn't out of the ordinary.

Looking at other recent years...
  • 2019: 2 claims
  • 2018: 7 claims
  • 2017: 3 claims
  • 2016: 6 claims
  • 2015: 5 claims
  • 2014: 3 claims
  • 2013: 4 claims

I think every year people look at the final waiver list and think that a dozen or so players are going to get claimed, but the reality is, every team is trying to find room for extra players on their rosters while being cap-compliant. Grabbing a guy who's making $3 million and couldn't crack the Canucks' opening-night roster isn't really all that appealing.

What seems abnormal is the amount of guys who are waived, and probably would have been claimed before, and I agree it may be a product of the salary structure of most teams.

I would have liked Sprong, but obviously I trust the process! Treliving knows what he's doing, and clearly Sprong was not the right way to go.
How is Byron at all relevant to the list of players who were claimed last year?

That's why so many players are placed on waivers at this time, most teams are counting on that fact that everyone else is doing the same and that most other teams have neither the cap space nor the roster room to claim someone. The Flames rolled the dice on this with Byron, but unfortunately in that case, they lost.

Kind of funny that the only 2 guys claimed were never mentioned in this thread.

Any easy access to the names? Is this list pre-season only? Has anyone else ever panned out well for several years like Byron? Obviously there have been a few cases of short-term value (e.g. McElhinney), but who else has gone from trash heap to treasure?

Technically, so many players are put on waivers this time of year because you can only have a 23 man roster. There is no choice but to put player on waivers.

But it is true that most go unclaimed because waivers is saturated and every other team is waiving player that have equal value.

Byron shouldn’t have been waived though. He was my dark horse pick that year to score 15 to 20 goals. He looked like a player on the rise to me.

Yeah, those counts are just for the preseason waiver claims.

The easiest place I found to find them is Wikipedia. Here's last season's: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018%E...ctions#Waivers

If you scroll down to the "See also" section on the page, there's usually a link to the next and previous seasons' transaction lists. There are quite a few recognizable names on the lists, but none that jump out at me as world-changers for their new teams.

Mildly surprised nobody took a shot at Christian Djoos. Breathtaking and effortless skater whether first steps, straight line, or moving laterally - similar to Kylington but with a more mature game.

Just two seasons ago he was tracking to be a legitimate puck-moving top four defenceman. While last season was a relative struggle, but he was combating a pretty serious leg injury which is tough when mobility is your biggest attribute.

If he manages a full recovery and two seasons ago is more reflective than last, huge for the Capitals having him still in their organization. But, tough to take that gamble for many teams with the cap crunch and his generous arbitration award. Intriguing player to track.
