I've said this before, if he had to, Michael Frolík could play 1st line RW, and likely do quite well.

Only on a bad team would Frolik ever be a top line player. He's more suited to a 4th line role than a 1st imo, and he's better than a 4th liner obviously.

3M line is awesome to watch - Frolik is closer to a 1st liner than a 4th IMO (I think he's a 2nd liner) - it's never been clear to me why the organization seems to have soured on him

Frolik is a Swiss army knife. He can play anything from the 1st to 4th line. And can play either wing. I think he's best suited to a middle six role. But where a Swiss army knife type player ends up really depends on where the team needs him and where he has the most chemistry. So far with the flames, thats been with Backlund and Tkachuk. But I could also see him playing with first line duties like Hudler did or even third line duties with a couple of youngins.

And maybe that's why they want to keep him. He slots in a 2-3 RW, but if the flames can trade Brodie or Hamonic for a better RW option, frolik just slides down the depth chart and fits in seamlessly

He's the weak link in the 3M line though imo. He's a low end 2nd liner, high end 3rd liner whose best days are behind him. The org didn't sour on him I don't think. His scratches were more Peters trying to get Neal going and trying to get him to stop taking bad penalties and start moving his feet.

Decent player, but the team needs his cap space more than they need him, which paints a picture.

The guy was over 0.5 points per game, all even strength or short handed

That is not too shabby, especially considering his ice time, line mates and role

Maybe for a game or two but I have a lot of doubts when it comes to an extended stay on the top line.

I liked Frolik but when his agent mouthed off the second time, it tells me that he was ok with whining publicly. I’d rather he go.

The Flames roster is among the very best in the NHL. See: #2 overall finish last season.

Yes, but still the “weak link” considering how important both Backlund and Tkachuk are to making that line go.

Sometimes chemistry is a real thing.

Frolik is a 2nd liner on the Flames because he just has magic with Tkachuk and Backlund.

Away from them though he's a 4th line player, imo not far above replacement level.

It's a real devil you know situation with Frolik. You know if you keep him where he has to play to find success, but you also know for Frolik being successful ultimately may come at the cost of the team being successful.

I think it's why it's been relatively hard to move him; the acquiring team can't be certain what player they are getting.

It's why a lot of us define Flames becoming a top contender as being able to shift Backlund (and Frolik by extension) to the 3rd line.

You can only have so many near-perfect players on a team before payroll catches up.

Any player put in place of Frolik is going to have issues as well, almost guaranteed. Unless you are willing to send a high valued asset along with him.

Frolik is a typical mid-6 RW. Trading him for nothing but a salary dump would leave a big hole since it is already a position of weakness for this team. Trading him for an equal player comes with a risk to upsetting chemistry, and trading him for a better player is going to be expensive.

I think the best option is to let him play out his contract, or send him with a 1st rounder or high-end prospect (or both) for a cost-controlled upgrade, although swinging such a deal would be difficult.

A 5 game kick in the teeth during the playoffs takes some of the shine off that #2 finish.

Ugh stupid Kadri. Though there is no guarantee we even try to make the Kadri trade if the zucker one goes through. That would have been an excellent lineup though!

Maybe. But is anyone arguing that TB is a second rate team based on their PO?

Maybe if Calgary had a SCF and 2 conference finals appearances in the previous 4 years they would get a pass?

I don’t know what second rate means but TB has had more recent success.
