Ya, Lucic will not see any top 6 time.
Aside from the NMC and being essentially buy out proof, this trade almost makes sense. Problem is he has a NMC and is buyout proof. Fail.

All of these people who are certain Lucic is going to fail. He played for the freakin Edmonton Oilers.. they are a horrible franchise with barely any NHL calibre players.
I am probably wrong but I am going to be optimistic and believe that Lucic will score 50 points next season and be a fan favourite.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Lucic
Tkachuk-Monahan-Bennett
Mangiapane-Backlund-Frolik
Jankowski-Ryan-Czarnik
Maybe the presence of Lucic helps Gaudreau play more freely. Lindholm can also make up for the defense deficiency due to the speed of Lucic. When is the last time Gaudreau has had a linemate who would crash to the net and be a #### disturber.
Then, if Monahan is as good as some think.. him and Tkachuk are basically another top line.

So I read somewhere (maybe even on here, I can't remember at this point through all of the posts) that Lucic's NMC becomes a modified NTC before the expansion draft, and that means no protection required?... Any truth to that or was whoever wrote that wrong?

The one thing that has never really been answered is what was actually talked about between the Neal camp and the Flames over a year ago.
Neal seemed pretty confident he would be playing with Gaudreau and Monahan and implied that this was communicated to him before he dined.
Then Peters came out in August and said Lindholm will play on that line.
This relationship got off to a rocky start right from the beginning. Not sure it would have ever worked with Bill Peters in Calgary.

I mean, even if he was told that. He still went ahead and showed up to camp at ECHL speed. It’s all on Neal.

Lucic has better possession numbers, can fight, board control and tons of hitting. I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised.

This is just such a poor idea....really do not understand BT's thought process here.
I have been advocating since the beginning of last year for the club to get tougher and harder to play against....but this aint that.
Just mind boggling stupid to me when you add in the structure of the contract, who is MUCH more likely to rebound from a bad year, the NMC, and even if both are poor skaters, one is glacial in comparison.
Just....ugh.

Yes, this was definitely discussed a year ago.
Neal has been known to have a strong personality. Wouldn't be surprised if he was stewing all year. It wasn't going to work here under Peters. The Flames had to move him & I doubt they had many options.
I'm willing to give a motivated Lucic a chance.

Neal contributed almost nothing to the Flames. So from that perspective you can’t be too upset about this deal. It is all about real money and cap hit.
But could you have a better example of buying high and selling low? You go out and win a bidding war for a player and a year later, you deal him for the worst contract in the league.

Why are you guys talking expansion.
Neither guy would be picked with those contracts.
Ron Francis is not stupid.

After digesting the trade, the way I see it is something happened behind the scene with Neal and he had to be moved. In return, we got Lucic. He definitely fills a need, especially with the departure of Hathaway and not many options available. We need toughness. So, out goes Neal and his cap hit, we save 500K in cap and if you consider an additional $1 million to fill Hathaway's role, Lucic cap hit amounts to approx. 4.25 million.
The worst part of this trade is the NMC, so hopefully Tre has a plan there. If we lose a valuable asset to Seattle, this trade is a major loss.
But I am also concerned about is that Holland is more capable then Chiarelli as a GM. If this was Chia pet, I bet Treliving comes out of this trade with an unprotected first-round pick.

players with an NMC have to be protected. So if he doesn't waive the clause, we'll have to protect him and expose someone valuable. That's the issue.

It's not about him getting picked up by Seattle, it is having to protect him because he has NMC.

Meh, trying to be optimistic.. might as well do that instead of calling it a complete failure already.

You guys should be shocked we could trade Neil at all let alone for some toughness and veteran leadership.
Lucic will play hard and challenge players. We were so soft in the first round. Game 5 was embarrassing.

According to Välimäki, Neal's relationship with Peters didn't work out at all. Neal's crappy condition from beginning of the season 18/19 was also mentioned.
Plus he said something about cap situation and a potential trade involving defenceman before the season starts (must believe it'll be Brodie).
So nothing new, but ensures those things said about Neal.

You can find a veteran with toughness for a lot less than 6 million a year out there.

Hathaway brought energy, speed and was an effective penalty killer. Lucic brings none of that so I don’t see him replacing Hathaway at all.
