One of them could have run into him trying to enter the zone. Butterfly effect then takes over.

Nope. The NMC won't expire until after that draft. Unless he and the Flames agree to permanently waive it - in writing - we're stuck with him.

Player cannot be traded without his consent (however, the clause can specify a modified no-trade clause that limits the NTC to a certain number of teams)
Player cannot be placed on waivers without his consent
Player cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent
Player is not exempt from a buyout or contract termination
The clause can travel with the player even if he consents to being traded or is claimed on waivers
This requires that the acquiring team sign an addendum to the contract ensuring that the clause does in fact travel with the player (written by the player's agent)
If the acquiring team refuses to sign the addendum, and the player waives his clause anyway, at that point the clause may be nullified
If the player is traded before the clause takes effect, the acquiring team can opt to void the clause

nice. so the NMC is likely gone. everyone here can back away from the ledge. We traded trash for trash

Sounds like the NMC paperwork and the trade call are still to be completed. Not positive it gets officially completed today.

Someone had mentioned that since Lucic was buyout proof than EDM will buyout Neal right away and just wash their hands of this.

The biggest issue from this trade for me is how it helps the Oilers.
I don't think the Flames ownership group wanted to buyout Neal, and trading for Lucic saves them real money so I think they like the deal for that reason.
For the Oilers they can now buyout Neal (which wasn't really an option for Lucic) and can save them $3.5M for 4 years, and then costs $1.9M in cap for 4 years.
So this buys them more space during McDavid/Draisaitls contract.
That reason alone is enough to not make this deal.

Well, I guess all we can do is hope for the best.
Because as of right now, this is just terrible in every way.

How many players have left Edmonton recently and went on to do worse with their new team?

No one could buyout Neal in the 2nd buyout window except the Flames.
The earliest Neal can be bought out is next summer.

Happy to know that trading for Lucic brings you joy. I feel like I am in the majority who do not derive any pleasure out of this trade.

Hopefully the NMC paperwork is the shredding of the paperwork.

Also because lucic has wanted out of Edmonton since about the november mark of his first season there.

So if the rumored retention is true their salaries would look like this?
James Neal - $6.35 Mil Cap Hit for 4 years ($23 Million in actual salary remaining)
Milan Lucic - $5.4 Mil Cap Hit for 4 years ($19 Million in actual salary remaining)

They both played like crap but Neal's only had one down year with some apparent off-ice issues complicating things. Lucic is done and has been for a while.
