assuming the NMC isn't an issue:
- Neal and Lucic are both done, so that's a wash
- small cap savings
- conditional pick
I'll call it a slight win. Alhough, I have 0% faith that Neal will bounce back and I know some people think he will

I get why the Oilers would do this, but for the life of me I don't understand why the Flames would. What's the possible upside here?

hm. Dubious claim at best.
The value contracts of Johnny, Money, Lindy and even Gio are Trelivings doing. Rittich was brought in under treliving. Hamonic too. Our most important secondary pieces (Andersson, frolik, ryan) were drafted, signed and acquired under tre.
Peters was brought in by Tre.
So that means that we owe the entirety of our top line, 3/4 of our top 4 D, our coach, and our starting goalie to Tre's reign.
Burke's last draft had us pass on Brayden Point for Hunter Smith.
Are you trying to claim we owe our current success to Feaster?

The team struggled in the playoffs. I put that on Peters' being a rookie and not adjusting fast enough.
I consider Valimaki and Andersson as part of the core too. So that's 3 top 4 defensemen acquired by Treliving for the core. Most GMs can't even acquire 1 young top 4 defensemen for their core. Tkachuk and Lindholm are both big core pieces.
5 of 8 "core pieces" were acquired by Tre.
Tkachuk
Lindholm
Hanifin
Valimaki
Andersson
Gio
Gaudreau
Monahan
Make up the rest of the core. Tre also got all 3 of those guys on ridiculous long term cap friendly contracts.

This is confusing me as well. At this point Lucic does not bump any of the current LWs out of the lineup, unless he gets moved to RW.
Either that, or there's another trade lined up to flip him. I don't even want to consider the possibility that Bennett gets traded to make room for Lucic.

I can't believe that it's happening, but...
Even if Neal returns as a scorer, we were covered on the goals-for front pretty well all season long. What we were missing is someone who's defined role was ensuring that the other team didn't look the wrong way at us.
I don't like overpaying for role players like this, but once all the dust settles it may be better than we all think. Tre is savvy, I don't think we'll get robbed here.

And managed to retain them both with excellent contracts. Give credit where it's due.

If the everyone thought Neal was bad here last year, wait until we get 82 games of Milan Lucic.

I also believe Neal had no chance of bouncing back here, but I think that is logarithmically more unlikely in Edmonton. When has a player bounced back playing in Edmonton?

Well, I guess all we can do is hope for the best.
Because as of right now, this is just terrible in every way.

Powerplay Quarterback

I wouldn't be surprised if James Neal consistently outcores Lucic for the rest of their contracts.
Lucic adds an element of toughness for us that we we're severely lacking.
This is probably a loss for Calgary, but with the rumors of James Neal and his attitude it softens the blow. It's a loss today and it's going to look worse after these contracts are over.
Unless we win the cup

Lucic would have made all the difference against an Avs team that was skating the Flames into the ground a few months ago....

Neal was a LHS as well, they just put him on RW.

Neither player will bounce back, this just comes down to the salary retention
