What's a "Schedule B" bonus? ... and how can it be up to the team to decide if they pay it or not, if it's contracted? ... or, do you mean, TOR doesn't put those types of bonuses into their contracts? ... if not, how can anyone claim to have "been screwed" if it wasn't in the deal?

Good spot to be in for Maroon. Either overpaid or playing where he wants.

On Entry-Level Contracts there are two types of performance bonuses allowed.
Schedule A bonuses are for individual performance type things like scoring a minimum number of goals/assists/points. They can also be earned for finishing high (usually top-3 among forwards/defence) on their own team in other categories such as ice time or plus/minus. A player can earn up to $850,000 total in Schedule A bonuses each season ($212,500 maximum for each individual category in up to 4 different categories).
Most of the top prospects sign deals that can pay the maximum in "A" bonuses.
Schedule B bonuses are much harder to earn because they deal with top-level performance league-wide. In order to earn "B" bonuses, the player must finish top-5 in voting for one of the major league awards (top-3 for the Lady Byng and Calder); or be named to one of the end-of-season All-Star teams; or finish top-10 league-wide in one of the major scoring categories (goals, assists, points).
The individual maximum for "B" bonuses is $2 million, and depending on the player's contract, he can potentially earn the full value for meeting any one of the qualifications. Many teams will only give out B bonuses to their very top prospects.
As sixth overall picks, Monahan and Tkachuk didn't have any B bonuses on their ELCs. Even as a fourth overall, Sam Bennett didn't have a full $2 million in B bonuses on his ELC. Puljujärvi's ELC had a similar level of bonuses as Bennett. Marner was the 4th overall between Bennett and Puljujärvi and didn't get any B bonuses on his deal.
Marner finished 4th overall in forward assists last season. That means he could have earned $2 million in Schedule B bonuses had he had any B bonuses on his contract. That's why he's upset.

Lou wouldn't give him the bonus' in his contract. It was a strange thing when it happened.

He signed the damn contract.
Marner is starting to look like a sulky player.

This courting period is pretty much a negotiation period IMO. I’m sure everyone is very careful about what gets documented.
|
If it isn't why does anyone trade for negotiation rights between the POs and July 1?

Recap of the “bonus” strife:
The favour in question appears to involve the bonuses doled out to the team’s young stars, according to Ferris. When former GM Lou Lamoriello signed Marner to his entry-level deal, included were the negotiated Schedule A bonuses — worth up to $850,000 annually — but Ferris was told the club would not hand out Schedule B bonuses and their potential additional $2 million, he told Feschuk. Soon after, Matthews was inked to his own entry-level deal, including both Schedule A and Schedule B bonuses.

Hmm.. not sure I agree here:
Being told by Lou that Toronto doesnt allow schedule B bonuses so he wasn't allowed to get one on his contract. (Team policy)
He signs, would have got the max for assists but didn't because of the above.
Next year Matthew's signs and get's a max schedule B bonus.
That's why he's mad, and I think that's fair.

Sure ok but then “He should quit holding out and sign the damn contract” is the response if he didn’t sign. I see no problem with a top pick being miffed he wasn’t even given the chance to earn some extra cash.

The Leafs are nowhere close to being able to pay Marner what he is worth. Even if they don't sign a back up goalie, or a 6th and 7th d man, the 6.9 M they have in cap space is still 2M shy of what Marner would get paid in the open market. If I were him I would ask for a trade now to get it over with.

If so, why wouldn't he not sign it until they included it, if it was so important to him... I must be missing something.

Toronto told him he couldn't have any B bonuses because they never give B bonuses to anyone.
Later they gave B bonuses to Matthews.
That's why he is pissed.
Edit: I see this was already posted.

Eric Francis @EricFrancis
Those wondering if Flames management is of the belief the team needs more size and toughness, I can report to you that last July 1 the team believed it had an agreement w UFA Ryan Reaves before the rugged winger chose to re-sign w Vegas. The desire to add muscle hasn’t changed.
