Because that is likely a $8M+ tandem.
Not interested in big money for Lehner

I'd be all for going after Lehner, but one would think he's going to get somewhere around 5-6M a seasons for 4-5 years.
I'm not sure we can afford that with where we're at today.

No one who ever brings up adding more size or grit to the team gives a #### about average height and weight of the roster.
In the history of the world, no one has ever thought to themselves 'we need to improve the 23 man average height on this team by an inch in order to compete.'

I think it's interesting. Is Lehner and a cheap backup better than a Rittich/Talbot combination?
Also, how cheap would Rittich be on a one year deal?
But again the money situation is very tight. Once Tkachuk, Bennett, Hathaway and Mangiapane are signed, you're maybe looking at $2 or $3 million of cap room. So everything depends on who you can move out, which has yet to happen.

I have to agree, but the Bruins play with a mentality, a snarl, that our boys can't seem to match (outside of chucky)

Of course, but I still think the concern about size is overblown.

You’re right, and that makes a difference. For me it’s less about “snarl” and more about determination—a roster full of dog-on-the-bone tenacity is what I want to see.

One of our biggest forwards is our softest. Teams issue has little to do with size. Point remains we could stand to add some sandpaper.
I think what's more important to add is speed and sandpaper. Team was slow compared to Avs.

Speed and size would help, just hard to find it with how little space we have not to mention everyone's looking for the same thing.
We have big guys but nobody who really plays "big" outside of Sam.
Part of me wanted to address this with our 1st pick this year, but alas we did not.

Of course you do, because you're characterizing new eras post to be about the physical volume of players when he is clearly talking about the physical aspect of the game and that lacking capacity of the team.
We can all tell the point new era is making here, and it's a good one.

So Kypreos on HC just now...was at the PA charity golf tournament yesterday (or recently anyway)...full of agents and players and guys in the business.
He said the overwhelming feeling was that Marner will be getting an offer sheet....and that the offer will be for 13m per or more...that the sheet has to make Marner the highest paid player in the game for it to work. Certainly believes things have gotten a bit cool between the Marner camp and the Leafs. Mentioned how Marner already feels like he was shafted by not being given his B bonuses on his entry level deal which cost him upwards of 3 million to this point, which fuels his ability to sign an offer sheet without feeling to bad about things. Says he definately wants at least Tavares money but only on a 5 year term so he can maximize his UFA money.
Fascinating if true.

Good, I hope Marner sticks it to the Leafs. They deserve it, they’ve changed the landscape of rfa contracts. Only fitting it bites them first.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Lou was the one to screw Marner out of his bonuses. This would be a nice way to make that up to him.

What’s the story with Marner and his bonuses? Aren’t these contracts pretty black and white? How did they screw him?

If I recall correctly it was something about it being a "team policy" that Toronto doesn't do schedule B bonuses.
**Edit**
Wasn't given a Schedule B due to team policy but Matthew's got one.
Schedule B has the high payout too (up to 2.2M) where as the A bonus cap I believe is $850k

He didn't have any Schedule B bonuses (for being top 10 in various statistical categories, a major trophy win, or a 1st/2nd Team All Star selection) as part of his contract, which is fairly unusual for a top 5 draft pick. But that's more on him and his agent than anyone else.
