Treliving was only on the job a month so hard to fault him but it's a bad look that MacDonald and Hunter Smith are both gone after such a short amount of time. Another kick in the balls when Lazar is cut, a guy we traded a 2nd round pick for as well. |
It's a 2nd round goalie from 5 years ago. I had that FC draft guide - they had McDonald ahead of Demko too. It's fine.

The Smith pick was bad. The Lazar trade was also bad, but it happens.

Nobody should ever lose a moment's sleep over taking Mason McDonald ahead of Thatcher Demko. Neither is going to the Hall.

Exactly. Quite a few years ago the Flames had a young defenseman who went to play in the KHL for a year but look at what that got him...

The Foo one is interesting because his KHL deal expires the same time as Calgary's rights for him would. But no harm in doing it.

And to think, I was almost convinced that Bennett wasn't going to get qualified. Man what a night it was last night. I think I was.....poisoned.

I'm with you. Also not convinced the book is written on McDonald... he was solid enough last year and might just be a victim of the numbers game with Parsons, Zagidulin, Gillies, and Schneider. Yes, he has fewer AHL games than Demko has NHL games - but goalies' development is notoriously nonlinear. Just look at least year - Jack Campbell and Jordan Binnington took the loong way there

I think Foo's rights in Calgary would actually extend with perpetuity thanks to the lack of an NHL/KHL transfer agreement

Every team has drafted highly-touted kids that didn't pan out.
That's why they hold a draft every year.

Are there any interesting names from around the league who didn't get qualified?

Did the Nucks give Granlund a QO? I saw some tweets that suggested they were leaning towards not giving him one.

#Flames are still in negotiations w/Curtis Lazar, although he's got the opportunity to talk to other teams. But #Flames are still in contact with his representatives. Chose not to qualify him based upon what his QO number was and any potential ramifications from an arb case.

There are probably a few players in this same situation around the League, I would think.

			McDonald won't be back.
 Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Brad Treliving on Mason McDonald, who was drafted 34th overall (second round) in 2014: "Obviously it didn't work out for Mason here. Since he's been drafted, we've added other goaltenders to the system and we can only have so many. We wish Mason all the best."

Yeah the Mason McDonald draft choice was a bit odd at the time, too bad it didn't pan out. Demko is looking like a gamer.

MacDonald actually showed improvement this year in the ECHL, although with the Russian signing, I don't think there was room for him in the Flames' system.

Flames have Rasmus Andersson, Dillon Dube and Oliver Kylington drafted in 2nd round since Brad took over. Pretty good haul IMO

A little too late as well. Schneider was ahead of him on the depth chart.

I thought he really turned a corner this year, but I guess it really is a numbers game. Perhaps Nick Schneider showed more flashes and is younger?

I hope Mason lands somewhere else.

The Canucks qualified Granlund, but did not qualify either one of Benoit Pouliot or Ben Hutton. They certainly appear to be renovating their defense.

Hunter Shinkaruk was also not qualified in Montreal.
