I was rooting for Suzuki or Brink, but the more I read and see of this kid, the more excited I get. Hope he has a long career as a Flame

The positional versatility is nice, I believe he played RW for the second half of the season.

With the 26th OA pick, the Flames select LW Jakob Pelletier
Hard not to love this pick after hearing about the skill and compete level.
Excited to see how he does going forward.
Welcome to the C of Red, boy.
After the Valimaki draft, I sat back listening to the analysis and wondering how the hell that kid fell to our spot in the draft. Still think that today.
With this one that feeling isn’t as strong, but reading the pre-draft analysis, and Tree’s take on the kid - this feels like another very solid pick, even if it doesn’t end up as a grand slam.

Scoring Winger

Looking forward to seeing him at development camp!
I believe it was Sam Cosentino who said on the broadcast that Pelletier told Flames management already that he's focused on trying to make the Flames in the fall. Costentino also mentioned how you don't hear that very often from late 1st rounders and it shows the kind of character and mindset the kid has.

Always loved the timing for any flames pick, they get to see the city during Stampede for their first rookie camp

Someone said earlier that he interviewed badly, and did not show well at the combine.

Starting to get really excited about this pick. Love the Marchand and Gallagher comparisons. Wonder if he could play his off-side.
Can't wait until development camp to watch him. I think he could possibly anchor the second line with Dube in a few years' time.

All I can get

Not wholly enamoured with the pick, but it's good to be choosing in the first round again. The Flames have been served quite well by their scouting staff so I'm willing to see how it plays out. Being a late first rounder on a currently high-ranking team, there should be less weight on the prospect's shoulders.
A lot of positives with this particular pick.

my initial reaction was pretty lukewarm, to be honest. Not that I doubt his poential, but I'm honestly not a big fan of drafting yet another left wing, and such a small one on top of it. Too bad Tomasino went off the board at 24, but I thought Lavoie would have been a really nice fit. Oh well.
reading up a bit more on this kid, I do think there's a lot of positives. Hope we got a good one.

My thoughts on this pick are these:
1) He has produced over a point per game in both of his first two seasons in the Q. That's a good sign. I also like his apparent confidence and drive to succeed. As much as I like to rely on the numbers as much as possible as someone who is mostly ignorant about the prospects, I think these two characteristics are important for success in life in general.
2) He was ranked all over the map by various scouting services. Two that had him ranked 14th include Edmonton radio personality and author for the Athletic Allan Mitchell (LoweTide) and Craig Button. Allan Mitchell's rankings are based on math as well as other things. Here they are: https://lowetide.ca/2019/06/21/here-...draft-edition/. I was encouraged to see that some people had him ranked very highly. Future Considerations also had him ranked 20th and Elite Prospects had him ranked 23rd. Cumulatively, these rankings suggest this pick was not off the board even though other opinions had him as late as 40th (Pronman) and 43rd (McKeen's).
3) I wanted Arthur Kaliyev with the pick. However, when everyone else in the whole 1st round lets someone go by, there might be a very good reason for that. The smartest man in the room syndrome is definitely something to avoid. That said, you might also be looking at Alex DeBrincat. I would still be a huge fan of a move that saw the Flames moving up in the 2nd round to get Kaliyev.

Admittedly, I've been to very few QMJHL games over the past few years (sorry folks, totally not living up to my name).
Alas the money for season's tickets are going to diapers. Funny now that works.
Last night I had a family thing and didn't get to see draft, by the time we got home the little one went straight to the crib and I went straight to bed (I'm getting old, I know).
Woke up, and the first thing on my phone is a Facebook message from a good friend of mine who is heavily involved the Q:
Quote:
F***ing love Pelletier!!!
|
I'm following up with him, two others that are heavily involved on the media side of things to get more info. All three opinions I trust heavily, at this point in their careers and given how well I know them and their track record on analysis, I trust them over the scouts (they would tell me I'm crazy for saying that, which just goes to their self-awareness).
That said here's a video on Pelletier from the QMJHL Facebook page (it's not on their YouTube for some odd reason)
https://www.facebook.com/qmjhl/videos/479121052875780/
Is there a way to embed videos from Facebook?
I'll post more info from the insiders when possible, and try and make the games when Moncton is in town.
Until then, here's a fantastic article out of Moncton on Pelletier:
In the Spotlight - Jakob Pelletier
Quote:
Moments after being selected third overall by the rebuilding Moncton Wildcats in the 2017 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft, Jakob Pelletier looked straight into the Rogers TV cameras and said.
“I’m a winner, and that’s what I’m going to bring to Moncton and we are going to win!”
|
Quote:
All the critics were slugging away. ‘He’s too small.’ ‘He’s not fast enough.’ ‘He can’t handle the physicality at the next level.’
The highest drafted player chosen by the Wildcats in almost a decade, proved all the critics wrong.
|
There are so many great quotes in the article I can't possibly put them all in this post.
