Evey team passed in the first round...I doubt you have a better read than NHL scouts

So a little Marty St. Louis in him?

yeah, was wondering too?
seems like a guy the flames identified early on and was one of a group they felt would be available at 26.
Like the pick, like the fairly unanimous evaluation on him having a compete level (with guys like Marchand/gallagher as being NHL comps) and like the fact it sounds like he goes to the tough areas on the ice.
there were other guys i would have been just as happy with, but happy with the pick...we'll see if it pays off in a couple of years hopefully

very smart and very competitive
skilled but not a dangler or end to end rusher
great vision as a playmaker
scores by going to tough areas
concerns about a player his size without great speed or hands, but he could make it based on compete, character
mild debate in scouting circles about his offensive upside but some teams think he is a clear first round talent

Normally Pronman likes these small guys. I like the pick a lot after reading up and watching the vid's.
So....is he fast or not? Edges i get. But what does "stride breaks down" mean? Like when I'm playing 10pm game on Friday after a couple beers and my stride gets messed up because my skate isn't tight enough?

Last season in his first year with the Flames (and first year scouting in the NHL), QMJHL area scout Patrick Lachance was a big reason behind Calgary's pick of Dmitry Zavgorodniy in the 7th round. He's got to be pumped tonight with this year's first rounder coming from the QMJHL.
|
Another exciting sign as Zavgorodniy immediately impressed and Pronman named Zavgorodniy, Emilio Pettersen, and Pospisil as 3 of his 12 biggest climbers from the 2018 draft.

Believe the Flames have jersey and hats ready for family members just in case.

I honestly really like this kid. I watched his highlights and really liked what I saw. He maybe JG height now, but I see him putting another inch or two on being only 18. And he is quite a bit thicker, lol. Got a good feeling with him.

A Moncton perspective from a poster on r/calgaryflames:
Quote:
I'm from Moncton and my old man has season tickets. Pelletier is the best player from the Q IMO by a fair margin. He drives play in an elite way. If the Habs were picking 26th he was an ideal pick. Also, Moncton should be a Memorial Cup contender, so you guys may gt to watch that!
Congrats guys

The Domi/Gallagher comparable is a really good one to me, though. His ability to be the most impressive player on the ice is something.

Gallagher / Marchand type is awesome
Happy with those comparisons.
I still do feel like we may regret passing on Suzuki though.

A middle 6 guy at 26 is nothing to sniff at. I get Dube vibes in that he never stops annoying the opposition.

Pelletier and Hoglander were #1 and #2 on my list on our preview show, so I'm pretty thrilled with the selection.
Cannot complain in the slightest. Looking forward to seeing him in person in a couple weeks.

@ToriePeterson
'Lil late night scouting report on #Flames pick Jakob Pelletier: I saw him a few times this season and in every game, he made an impact thanks to his insane compete level. He's smaller (5'9) but man, he plays like a 6'5, 220-pounder. Lots of heart, great playmaker.

Poirier had lots of tools but lacked a tool box and liked the bottle too much, Pelletier seems to have not only have the tools he has high IQ he competes hard, plays threw injury's etc because he loves the game, Poirier was never like this.

the Athletic's Scott Wheeler has his draft grades up... broken in Winners, OT Winners, OT Losers and Losers. Flames pick merited a B (OT winner) based on his pre draft scouting:
Quote:
I’m a big fan of Jakob Pelletier’s, and he fits right in with the Flames’ established willingness to draft small, talented forwards. Pelletier is among the most creative players in the draft, has excellent puck skills and makes his linemates better by getting them involved before they expect it and finding them in dangerous areas for scoring chances. The Flames are committed to just out-skilling teams up front, and that’s exactly what Pelletier does. He’s going to terrorize the QMJHL next year and was one of the only available forwards with true second-line upside, even if I think Bobby Brink or Suzuki better fit the mould of what they were going for.

Guess what grade the Oilers got?

High ankle sprains have a way of slowing one down, Lavoie was also on a powerhouse team and playing his 3rd playoffs, first 2 he did no better than Pelletier without an injury

With his ability to play all 3 forward positions, and a coach saying he's a better centre than winger, I wonder if he gets a try there next year or with the flames down the line. We need talented C prospects in a bad way. However, with the flames' elite depth on LW, I'm thinking this was a BPA pick, which I'm all for.
I was rooting for Suzuki or Brink, but the more I read and see of this kid, the more excited I get. Hope he has a long career as a Flame

Good we drafted a jerk with skill. I've been saying for a while that the Flames need more jerks.
Hopefully tomorrow we draft some a$$$$$$$ as well, we're really short on that skill set.
