Flyers are probably hoping throwing this kind of money around will entice Johnny. Obviously they must have some sort of plan around Hayes to be offering him that kind of money.
Going to be a lot harder to sign players like Tkachuk when middling players can command that kind of money.

Jets saw their window and went for it. Late 20 pick is fine for a depth guy like Hayes. This was their opportunity, before they have to pay Laine and dump Trouba.

He makes more than any member of the Flames (for now, at least).

This makes Evander Kane’s contract look reasonable. It’s crazy. I never would have fathomed Kevin Hayes getting a 7+ million dollar contract, but here we are.

Cripes this is bad. At this rate we might need another round of compliance buyouts just to save the league from itself.
It’s entirely conceivable Duchene makes more on his next contract than McDavid.

Kudos to Hayes agent for getting that much money and term from the Flyers. There are some stupid GM's in this league.

Anyone want to discuss Hayes as a player?
Can play all forward positions, but mostly center. Played with Alain Vigneault in NY and was used primarily a defensive specialist. He fits the Flyers' biggest need of 2C and of defensively aware players. I can see why the Flyers targeted him.
Re: Contract term. "Worst contract ever" and comparisons to Holik are pretty unfair. The number being thrown around was 6x6.5 -- this isn't that off. The Flyers are definitely overreacting to ownership wanting flashy moves, but this is hardly outrageous. They're lucky enough to have other players on good / EL contracts they can afford to make some overpayments on their way to being a contender.

I think flyers were something like 13 million BELOW cap floor before the signing. They were/are well set up cap wise with super deals on Horacek, Giroux, Couturier etc so they can afford it. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them go hard after Duchesne too and maybe trade Gostisbere to Montreal for a ransom.
Having said that, it’s still too high for me. I figured he would be in the 5-6 million range, just shows how good our Monahan/Gio/Johnny/Backlund contracts are.

Yeah, exactly.
I was agreeing it was a good thing that we were able to sign Lindholm prior to his breakout year.

Then again, Jeff Skinner got 9M per for 8 years and that dude hasn’t cracked 65 points.

Personally I think Hayes is over rated. He's big, but doesn't really use his size, he is just ok offensively and is just ok defensively. He is best suited as a 3rd line center, but keeps getting mis cast as a 2nd line center.
Part of the problem is that he got over paid on his last contract at $5.175m and that's where Philly had to start as opposed to end.

These inflated contracts are what you get when you eliminate the super long term deals. The players are still going to get their money, but now they have to get in seven years max. They aren't just going to take less.
If anything, this will help with parity and player movement. Transactions are what drives interest in sport.
But to be clear, there's no scenario where Kevin Hayes is worth $7M a year. unless they're gambling that Kevin Hayes will be able to woo Johnny Gaudreau.
Congratulations, you signed a Freddie Hamilton for $50 million.

I think we can conclusively blame legal marijuana.
"I signed to who to what for how long now?"

How much does that make Chucky worth as an analogue? 12 million?
