Bottled water is a successful product, available throughout the world, but it and the behaviors it fosters are the subject of vocal criticism. This criticism primarily falls into environmental, economic, and health categories

I never liked drinking water either. The only water I ever had was when I brushed my teeth. So for me to get used to it, I just gradually brought it in to my diet. I would have, say, two bottles a day and do that for a week or so, until it was routine for me to have it, then the next week I would up that to three bottles and so on. I drink tons of water now. You really do start to crave it.

I suspect it's all psychological. Penn and Teller did a great skit where they went into a fancy restaurant and sold people "exotic water" from all around the world. All the people claimed they could tell the difference between the water, and even prefered one over the other. When really all the water was coming from the same hose out back.

Has anyone in Canada ever gotten ill from drinking bottled water? Compare that to stats of illness connected to tap water.
...If you think I sell it I may as well go along with it...so yes, that's my choosen profession. I figure telling people of the dangers involved with drinking tap water over the internet will boost my sales.

Well, the "7 glasses" is probably a little off just because it would depend on how active the person is and how quickly the person loses water. Drinking water is definitely important though... something like 60% of the body is made of water and 75% of the brain is water, and naturally, we lose water in various ways and the body would need to replenish the water some how to stay healthy.
I was told that if you ever actually get thirsty and need to drink fluids to quench your thirst, you're likely not drinking enough water to begin with.
Big water drinkers (like myself) rarely get thirsty. I would suspect that going through life not drinking enough water would probably have some bad consequences when one gets up there in age, whereas the effects wouldn't be too noticeable when young.

That would not be surprising, since until very recently, far more people drink tap water than bottled water.
As for taste, most bottled water is practically inert, and would have no taste at all.

I think that's probably one of the best ideas yet.
I'm with Mango- I know I should be drinking more water. A lot more. But even when my doctor told me to drink more, and I told him about the reasons I often don't, his answer was just to do it.
That just doesn't help me overcome the blandness of it. I even tried for a week to drink a litre every day. All that did was make me not want to see water ever again.

Here is a good FAQ on bottled water from Health Canada.
Questions and answers on bottled water
Quote:
Why has there been such an increase in the consumption of bottled water?
This is a matter of personal taste and preference for bottled water over municipal tap water. Survey results have also shown that consumers are concerned about the quality (chemical pollutants) of drinking water in Canada. Some people think that bottled water is safer than municipal tap water, but there is no evidence to support this.
Can drinking water cause illness?
Bottled water can also contain these contaminants. However, illness caused by bottled water is very rare in Canada because it is treated, disinfected and monitored to ensure the absence of harmful organisms. To the best of our knowledge, no waterborne disease outbreaks have been associated with the consumption of bottled water in Canada. Published reports have shown that in countries where manufacturing practices are not as strict as in Canada, improperly manufacturedbottled water has led to outbreaks of cholera and typhoid, and to "Traveller's Disease".
|
So far the jury is still out on whether or not it is better or worse for you, but it definitely cost a lot more.

I do drink 2-3 L of Milk a day though.

You drink 2-3 LITRES of Milk a day?????? Or did you mean glasses? If it's L's, then you need to buy your own cow!!
Also, Ive seen a new flavored bottled water that Gatorade has come out with..it has the same electrolytes that give you energy that are found in the sports drinks (regular Gatorade), but it is water! Not sure if they're available in Canada yet, but Im sure they will be soon.
Water's good for your skin..better than other liquids (especially sugary drinks which just dehydrate you even more).
Im halfway done a master's in nutrition so I could blab about this all day, but I won't....

Yeah, I can't imagine drinking that much milk a day... I always see people walking around with 1 Liter things of milk like it's nothing. Milk is a utilitarian food to me, put it in cereal, it is a part of making chocolate, butter, ect. But eww the taste make me want to hurl and the thought that it sat inside a cow before being processed, ugh... yuck
Like I said, I don't mind it and it's uses in cooking and creating other things, but on it's own... hellll no.
I actually drink Vanilla Soy to get the calcium I'm missing from milk. I'd rather drink bean juice than Cow breast juice.

Yeah I drink soy milk myself..I like it better for 2 reasons:
1) the expiration dates are MUCH longer..they last for at least a couple of months
2) the Very Vanilla flavor tastes very yummy, it's a little sweeter than regular soy, so it doesnt taste like yucky regular milk does (I don't know how Im related to OILFAN! My mom said that even as a baby, he went through bottles of milk, while I didnt like it so much!)

An expert in the house. Sorry this is slightly off-topic, but where is a good resource for nutrition, that a lay person (like me) can read about. I am tired about hearing bogus nutrition advice from people around me that don't know anything and always say "oh that's bad for you."

if regular milk isn't tasting good, try skim. People think it's too "watery" but you get used to it. 2% tastes like cream now.

I love water. In my early 20's I really started drinking water regularly instead of pops/juices. It makes a world of difference for your health, and you just feel better. Nowadays, first thing in the morning I have to have a pint of water. Usually have a bunch of it throughout the day too. I easily clear 1 Litre a day, probably much more than that.
One thing I can recommend is Ribeena. Just add a small amount to a pint of water and you've got a sweet tasting black current drink. It tastes awesome and you are still guzzling 95% water. I think it has some vitamin C, etc as an added bonus.
Other than water and Ribeena, and the occassional Iced Tea, I drink nothing else.

I don't drink much water straight either. The Brita in the fridge is only for the cats.
At home I drink mostly Crystal Light and at work they have the naturally flavoured Aquafina (mixed berries or grape are my favorite).
The only time I actually drink water is when I'm feeling too lazy to go to the cafeteria and fill up the used Aquafina bottle from the water fountain.
