Would love this....however we often forget that we are missing our second rounder required for this unless we are putting together a ridiculous deal. It would be risky to trade next years 1st for this years 2nd just to get the currency to try for an offersheet

I'd like to see the Flames make a few years worth of 1st round picks starting thins June. Cant trade 1sts all the time. you build winners through the draft. Tree has to get back to that. Chicago went on their long run because they could replace guys who were due raises with farm kids. You start trading too many picks consecutively and you're not doing a good job.

An offer sheet at 8.4M costs a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Most often, if an offer sheet is a possibility, you will see a trade of those picks plus a kicker, to save face.

Point at $8.5M for 5 years is a pipedream. No way does he sign for that cheap.

Offer sheets are next years picks. Free agency starts after the draft.

They might be off, but probably not way off. It's kind of interesting seeing projections as they go down the list, or how much Laine's crappy season hurt him.

I bet Point signs for less than people expect. He deserves a ton of money, and he's a great player.
But Tampa tends to be good at making these deals. Players in Point's position usually end up having good contracts for whatever reason. Small skilled players rarely end up being overpaid.

No state tax in Florida is the only reason Tampa is good at signing value contracts

I am nervous to even suggest it because of Neal and Brouwer... but I think Ryan Dzingel might be a player whose value has dropped since being traded to Columbus. He is really fast, looked good when I watched some Sens games, and I think he can add another element to a line with Gaudreau and Monahan.
Why not try and start next year with the following Top 6:
Tkachuk-Lindholm-???
Gaudreau-Monahan-Dzingel (4-5 mil?)
Bennett-Backlund-Mangiapane
Dube-Ryan-Neal/Hathaway
The Flames can then try to land a top line player with a package of: Brodie+Jankowski+Kylington+1st Round 2020
Maybe they can get Hall for that package? Huberdeau? Zibanejad? Or sign another Free Agent and trade Brodie, Jankowski, Frolik, Neal separately if possible.

Dzingel was one of the only Sens worth watching this year. He's energetic and fast, nothing like Neal and Brouwer who succeeded for a long time by coasting on their shots and positioning.
The thing with Dzingel is that his shot isn't great, he's fairly soft, and a lot of teams will be interested in him because he's reasonably young.

Thanks for the extra information, I appreciate it as I only watched him a limited amount. I do think that adding him on a line with Monahan and Gaudreau might work though and entice him to come to Calgary (which I know isn't much)
Gaudreau - Playmaker
Monahan - Shooter
Dzingel - Speed
Especially if the Flames can bring in another Top line player (or fringe top line but definitely top 6), that will give the Flames two top lines with an incredible shutdown line with Backlund, Bennett, and Mangiapane who can also provide scoring.

I don't think Dzingel is worth it. Sure, he's young, but I would rather us try and see if Neal can find his game again. I know that we are all pretty much writing him off (myself included), but I think he needs a stretch of games in the top 6 in order for him to be effective. My hope is that we have a Gaudreau - Lindholm - Neal line, Gaudreau with the speed, Lindholm with the 2-way play, and Neal with the scoring ability. Surely Neal can't be worse than what he did with this year's shooting %.
And for the names you've listed:
Hall - Wait it out on him. He's a UFA next summer and I think he would strongly consider Calgary. Some salary would have to be moved, but Frolik and Stone are coming off of the books, giving us a good chance to snag him. Would allow us to move Tkachuk on the RW and have Gaudreau/Hall as the top 6 LW's.
Huberdeau - I really would like him on the team, and if Florida was willing to take Brodie + 2019 1st + something else for the guy, sign me up. Huberdeau is super underrated around the hockey world and just put up a 90+ season.
Zibanejad - Good player, but same position as Monahan. Is the 1C because he has to be and there's no one on the team better than him. The Rangers would want Andersson++, Dube, or some other quality piece from us that I'd rather not spend. Lindholm slotting as C would probably be the best and cheaper option for the Flames.
It'll be interesting on what Treliving does during the draft... Because I truly think that we will not be picking #26 with what I feel he has going up his sleeve. I firmly believe that with the strong rumors of Lindholm moving back to C makes me believe that we are looking for a big shakeup in the top 6 with a player most likely coming to us and the 26th OA+ player + prospect/pick going the other direction.

So trying to understand all the conversations.
What else would the Flames have to add for Tampa to do a Point for Monahan trade?
Knowing that Monahan is at $6.5 for 4 more years and Point is going to get paid $9M+.

I think CBJ will sign Dzingel before he gets to UFA. One of the factors in that trade was that Dzingel went to Ohio State Uni and know Columbus well and would be more likely to want to stay there.

Not sure how enamoured Dzingel will be with Columbus after they've been scratching him in the playoffs, but we'll see.

Can someone please explain why Point is so much better than Monahan? (other than his 92 pts this year?) He's smaller, plays 2nd line, has had 1 great year. Is he some kind of phenom? Or do we just want the smallest 1st line in the NHL??
Point is going get $9+ for a single 41 goal season???
What am I missing here?

You mean the single game he was scratched?
We can only hope that pisses guys off enough to want to leave - Maybe Neal will demand a trade.

Point plays on TB's 1st line and has had two years that would exceed Monahan's career-high in points before this year. His rookie year, he had 40 points in a shortened year (68 GP)
He's also just a more efficient producer in basically every regard and is one of the most creative and exciting players in the league
He's small but he has the motor of Garnet Hathaway. Always going on the ice
He's one of the very best young players in the entire league, period

I just hope Treliving's experience with Brouwer and Neal has taught him to exercise caution in signing 30+ year old UFA's to >2-3 year contracts. I was worried by the length of the contract to Giordano when he was a pnding UFA, but that was a player the Flames knew well, and even if his play tails off in the next 3 years, i think it was worth it. I still worry a little about Derek Ryan he turns 33 this year and has 2 more years, but at least he played well this season

To add to Scorp, think of Point as being in the Martin St. Louis mould, but slightly bigger. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and can work the boards.
Projections have him at around 8.5M, possibly reaching 9M dependant on term, and Monahan being cost effective is what is causing the chatter.
It's not really a "Calgary wants that player without taking the other team into consideration" conversation, but rather "Tampa has a cap problem, and Calgary is one of the few teams in the league that could help" conversation.
And why Monahan+ is being named going the other way, is because Point actually is that good, and he brings exactly what Calgary desperately needed in the playoffs. A line driving centre.
A centre core of Point, Lindholm, Backlund and Ryan would be crazy good.
