I thought this was an interesting article (by Andrew Berkshire) regarding the first three games of the series: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...g-flames-game/

Could be management, could be draft picks. Not just players.

Well, yes - there should be changes. The GM should continue trying to make the Flames better no matter what happens in this series. And if we lose, the criteria of what makes us "better" might differ based on what we see happen these final few games.
I don't think we just go full Oiler and move a big piece just to make a change - it has to be beneficial to the overall success.

Not a chance. With their lack of playoff experience, the Flames should never have been considered post-season favourites in the West. Treliving probably has another two years before he really feels the heat.

I'm super excited for this game.
We know the Flames were a great regular season team, it resulted in the most enjoyable season as a Flames fan I can remember. Today, we get to see if they can be a great playoff team.
I know some people on this board have already given up, and I know it's not going to be easy... Avs have all the momentum, and they're playing at home. But this is the playoffs. There are going to be losses. And sooner or later, you're going to be faced with a "must win". This is probably a "must win"... But if we do win, we're back in the driver's seat.
It's the playoffs people! At least act like you've been here before...

They just moved a major piece (Dougie) out last year. You can't do it every year and expect different results.

The first line need to prevent being completely hemmed into their own zone every shift, they looked like a goddamn penalty kill. So much for Lindgolm and his "Selke caliber play". The guy is a lifetime away from Mark Stone

We get to see what this team is truly made of tonight - lose (esp. if embarrassing performance ala games 2 & 3) and we know this core is paper tigers.
Man up and win... lets see how this goes.

Well I'd say the moves you do if you lose in the first round are different than if you lose in the SCF.

Well when you don’t control the pairings I see the merit in trying to balance them. You can’t ensure Gio-Andersson would be against MacKinnon. So make the three best pairings you can so that none of them can be exploited.

Tampa are paper tigers? Honestly asking for opinions...they got their asses kicked. Swept with multiple blowouts.
Flames won 4-0, lost in OT, and got blown out

IMO it comes down to gameplanning against Brodie.
Gio gives you the best chance at negating Brodie's shortcomings. Asking Valimaki to play his first playoff game with Brodie as his partner is a disaster in the making.

The Avs probably aren't attacking Lindholm's side of the ice much. I'd be curious to see the stats for it. If I were the Avs, my cycle and zone entries are coming from the side that Johnny is at.
Honestly, there's only so much Lindholm can do out there defensively. He can't cover 3 positions.
The bigger disappointment is Monahan. He is the centremen, he's suppose to be the defensive anchor, not Lindholm, but Mony has just been terrible defensively. He's weak and he's slow.

Really it should be Brodie sitting. I'd feel a lot better if that were the case

you just don't scratch a player that was instrumental in getting you to the position you are.
Especially when you're looking to trade him in a couple of months.
Best case scenario for Calgary is Brodie finds his game and goes on a tear, both for on ice results as well as trade value.

tampa also has made the cup finals once and the ecf twice. they also just had the best regular season in league history. i would also be surprised if tampa didn't make changes this offseason.
this core has made the second round once against a horrible vancouver team and got swept the next time they made it in. now they're being outplayed by the worst team in the playoffs. they've gone winless in their last 5 road playoff games.
i would love nothing more for the flames to respond in a big way tonight, but it would be foolish not to pursue improvements if they keep losing in the way that they have been.
