I get he is an awesome guy and did alot for kid sport but we need a little perspective.
Well, to be fair Jonas Salk didn't cure polio either.... no one has cured polio. He was simply the lead researcher on the team that found the vaccine, of which he controversially took all the credit for. His team still holds grudges to this day. His vaccine has only recently come back into use as from 1961 into the new millennium a totally different oral vaccine was the standard polio vaccine administered to babies, Salk was basically the celebrity face of a vaccine that until fairly recently had a very short run a long time ago and which is probably more notable for unleashing the ambulance chaser movement when incorrectly made batches of vaccine gave tens of thousands of children polio resulting in dozens of paralysis cases and a dozen deaths. The parents sued Cutter Labs and won in a series of landmark decisions. Albert Sabin's oral vaccine is the one which can be probably really credited with wiping out polio in NA. We use a heavily modified version of Salk's vaccine now because polio is no longer endemic and there's less risk of vaccine injury with the modified Salk vaccine than Sabin's. That said, Salk does have prizes named in his honour at the University of Pittsburgh where the vaccine was developed. You know, keeping it local. As it should be.
Moral of story? Throwing names out there because their accomplishments sound important, when "doing a lot for kidsport" at the local level is pooh poohed because it isn't some earth shattering thing is just kind of sad. The man did a lot for the city and the community during his time here. If they choose to go down this road I'm all for it. He deserves it.

See, unofficial names are dumb. How many people have heard of or use unofficial street names? If you're going to honour Iggy with a street named after him rename the actual street, officially.

Maybe, but street names aren't a huge honour that is reserved for giants of the world. Heck - if you go to Ottawa, there are three streets named after a guy who is a great-great grandparent of my wife (using his first, middle and last names). Why? He was a surveyor and got to name streets.
Yes, it's a different spelling, but that doesn't stop people from thinking it was named after Ric.
I tried searching to see who McIvor was, but came up empty. I do recall a few years ago, there were some people complaining that Ric got a street named after himself and someone posted a story explaining who the real McIvor actually was.
It would be nice if the city had a site you could search to find the origins of various street names around the city. Many are just named after the family who used to own the land the community was built upon.

I'd be on board with renaming it east of Mcleod Trail, but not west. That should revert back to it's original name (as I wish all those roads would be). But probably wait until the new arena and other area development is hashed out so we actually know which streets will actually still be around and in what form.
