So the Flames didn't have a 2019 2nd.
And they didn't have prospects that probably could be used instead of that. The second tier guys like Philips, Foo, Gillies, etc aren't that.
So unless they were willing to trade one of the big 3 young dmen, or Dube - then they didn't have much to deal.

True also.
But it is what it is. Treliving paid up front, others are paying up now.
We're still best in the west until the standings or the playoffs say otherwise.

I think people are also kind of bummed because we expected Treliving to Stone for a song.

Take Neal out of the picture and I still don't think Treliving gives up Valimaki.
Buy low, sell high. We still don't know what we have with these three young d-men. What we do know is they're making large leaps in their development. A guy like Brodie, on the other hand, looks like his value is topping out -- so come July, if you can get a first for him, why not?

I agree with your first sentence. This 100% came down to Treliving not wanting to give up Valimaki. The Neal contract wouldn’t have helped us down the road but I think it’s completely irrelevant to the outcome of this trade. This, to me, is not wanting to trade Valimaki and nothing else.

And I continue to think that the Flames have put themselves in an excellent position to hold that Pacific Division spot: They are three points up on SJ with a game in hand, and they own the first tie-breaker. After Wednesday the Flames will play 11 of their final 18 games are at the Saddledome. Moreover, three of their final four games are on the road at a time when most of the playoff seeding will have been set.
The Flames control their own destiny, and are in very good shape down the stretch.

I had asked Boomer if the rumored deal of Frolik + 1st for Zucker was true on Twitter.
He just replied and said "Return was significantly more than that".
In that case I'm happy they didn't make that move.

I assuming he meant return from Calgary for Zucker was bigger, but possible the deal was bigger on both sides.
Fenton does have a history with Neal from his time in Nashville.

Ya I’m fine with this not panning out. I don’t think trading for Zucker is worth disrupting the locker room and worth a first. Maybe I’m naive but I believe our team chemistry is a big part to why they have been so good and that this team needs to keep their first rounder instead giving it out for sub 50 pt players.

I think the Flames big acquisition today is going to be a real important part of a long playoff run.

Next deadline will be more of a time to push more chips into the middle once this group sees what it can do in the playoffs.
Need to shore up a couple of soft spots in the off season first.

Providing the baseline for the Flames is intact (best players being best players).
And somehow the James Neal we thought we got in the summer decides to show up. Then add a beast mode playoff Sam Bennett.
This team is in pretty good shape.
Those three scenarios aren't too far fetched either.

Let’s not completely discount the risk of doing nothing here. The West loaded up and the Flames are not insulated from that by any means.

Calgary has the easiest schedule of any team in the National Hockey League starting March 1st.

Not to mention the breakout of Czarnik too.

Some speculation in the comments of that tweet that perhaps James Neal could've been the return since their contracts are virtually a wash.

Yes, but unfortunately, San Jose's is pretty easy too.
Flames have 12 at home and 10 on the road the rest of the way. SJ is 11 and 8, with similar competition.
Having said that, I remain confident.

Treliving always does his best transactions at the draft. At that time, he will have seen his team go through the playoffs, and will have a better idea of their assets and needs for future playoffs. To sell the farm to try to push such an inexperienced team to the finals against the juggernaut that is the Lightning this year would have been extraordinarily poor asset management.
The Lightning will not be able to keep their team together after the end of this season, so with the experience the Flames will gain in the playoffs this year, the window will be open much wider next year for them to make a good run at the Cup.

Only 20 games left. The Flames have 11 at home and 9 on the road remaining.
They are a better road team than SJ, and both teams are excellent on home ice, but the Sharks need to clear Calgary by four points.
