I'm glad we kept Valimaki. Top defenseman worth more than top winger and Valimaki has that kind of potential

Yes and Yes.
However, Calgary didn't have the cap space to sign that contract.
Contrary to CP opinion, I believe the Flames don't consider a guy like their #2D expendable for cap room, and guys like Neal and Mike Stone are not carrying positive value either.

He is not a 9.5m player. He's making the same as Benn, Malkin, and Ovie.
Yeah, those contracts were signed years ago, but still....

Vegas still needs to sign William Karlsson. How are they gonna squeeze under the cap?

Do you think he's the third best winger in the game? Top ten forward?

I think overall this is pretty great for Vegas. Pretty jealous.
But Calgary didn't have the cap space. The Flames would have had to pay even more to get rid of bad contracts.

I get not wanting to give up Valimaki, but there is some serious underrating of Stone going on here. He is legitimately one of the top wingers in the entire NHL, and those guys are worth paying a price for.

Was just looking at that on capfriendly. They're gonna have a serious cap crunch next year.

I think people get overhyped by the media. Then fans think they need this guy.

Giving up Valimaki AND signing that deal?... I am not upset that we didn't.

Vegas found themselves in a very favourable situation for getting stone and did very well

Pretty close.
I'd say he'd be about 5 spots down from Patrice Bergeron, and that's only because Bergeron has a longer track record of results. So maybe around top 20 at worst?
I'd put Stone on a very similar level as Gaudreau.

Lol No Way Stone is close to Gaudreau, man everyone overreacting! Stone is very good but is not worth Valimaki and 9.5 frickin million. So glad Tre is our GM

Gaudreau makes $6.75M on a contract signed only 2 seasons ago.
A top 20 guy in the league puts him more like $8M.

I think I'd rather have Stone on this deal than Matthews on his...

That contract is brutal.
Vegas got much better but there's no way I'd want that on the Flames.
