How have our games against VGK gone this year? Blew them out in one and lost a close game in the rematch. Not scared of them at all.

I say it certainly wont hurt anything to add some size and muscle to this club, because we are demonstrably smaller and more finesse than a majority of clubs.

Ultimately it's about versatility. I don't suggest the Flames will be imposing their physicality on teams as our chief strategy in winning a series.
It's about adding different looks for if/when a playoff series does go that way.

I don't think they're wrong about size. The worry about getting past Vegas and San Jose sounds like a hot take.
It makes me wonder if the team internally wants Smith to regain #1 form. His ability to break up a forcheck in the playoffs to protect the Dmen from getting pounded could be a major consideration.
|
Someone showed the stats. Think it was an athletic article that basically puts some doubt around how impactful smith “protecting the dmen “ truly is.
At the base of it the flames are essentially playing with house money compared to where they thought they’d be at beginning of the season. I don’t think they expected to be competing for the div/ conference title this year and so never planned on figuring out goaltending until after this season.
Flames are in this position largely inspite of smith but they are handcuffed.
I believe that gives them pause to do anything big this year.

TSN clearly are not Flames fans or believers.
Apparently the west is so bad that it's "easy" to build a cushion on teams like SJ and WIN. I didn't realize there were so many skeptics still after the season we've had. Screw em.

This is fine if all else is equal, but it rarely is. It will hurt if you're taking skill, speed, two-way play out of the lineup for size and muscle.
In the past few years we've seen guys like Bouma, Stewart, Brouwer, Neal completely bomb on this team. That's why guys like Ryan and Czarnik and Mangiapane are in our lineup.
The bigger, physical guys who've had any success for us - Bennett, Tkachuk, Ferland are all skilled play-driver types, and in at least two of those three's case, excellent skaters.

This season, games against San Jose and Vegas, most notably. It's stood out to me when watching that it's a dynamic we're simply unable to match.
The 2-0 loss in Vegas, I felt the Flames generated the least chances they had all year, and weren't able to push through the physicality. Plenty of long shifts pinning us in our own end by the 3rd/4th lines.
Boston has also given the Flames trouble and play a similar style.

Yea, and this after their circle jerk about how WIN and SJ are better suited for long playoff runs because they are the better team... all 3 of those clowns are a joke honestly, all part of the problem with eastern bias for awards.

Vegas was a team who we absolutely embarrassed the last time we had played them.
Flames took them lightly, and Vegas took that game very seriously.
I don't think that was representative of the playoffs.

What about when the Flames beat Vegas 7-2? Did they have enough grit that night?

To flip it to an outsider's perspective - would you be talking about how NYI are one of the favourites in the East? Or would you be overlooking them and pointing to teams like PIT or WAS?
It's all fair - we just have to earn our respect in the playoffs this year. If we do, just like the Jets this year, we'll be noticed and mentioned as a top team next year.

The Flames are different then most teams. Their game is based on a group of skilled D carrying or moving the puck. And to an extent a goalie to start the process.

Flames closest comparable in the last 10 years is CHI.
They were skilled, had a couple of heavy players and a bunch of rats.
