Steinberg: Sens asking 1sts, one of Valimaki/Kylington/Andersson, + more for Stone
Valimaki just picked up another assist in the AHL. 8 pts in 11 AHL games for the rookie. That’s extremely good, he’s completely untouchable.

With Hayes and Simmonds still out there as well, the game of chicken by the holding player teams, and then dominoes, should stretch late into the morning I am guessing.

I’d prefer to stay away from a major move at the deadline. We would likely overpay and either lose him to free agency or put ourselves into a difficult cap position if we sign him.

If only we can get Chiarelli to take Dorion out for one day and take his job. Stone signed for Prout, Peluso and a 7th

Flames need to be careful with the spending. They are still going to need some assets and cap space for getting a goalie in the off season.
A big "No" for me on the payment wanted for Stone. Not sure u want flames paying any of the rumoured prices for a legit forward.

One of the reasons the Hurricanes trade worked out for us was because the whole freakin' league wasn't in on it.
The trade deadline seems too much like July 1 for my tastes.

I get it, and if we were a bubble team this year I'd be all for standing pat yet agin. But you can't expect to be back in this exact position next year. It's been my entire lifetime since we've been here. If these guys are a scorer away from making a real run.. take a good, hard look at it.
|
That's the thing to me though....scoring is not, or hasn't been, an issue at all for this team, so why is it the necessity?

Look what Dorion has to show for Zibinejad, Karlsson, Hoffman, Turris, and Dzingle today. Plus add this year's Ottawa 1st to that list. It's a complete disaster.
He's every bit as bad as Chiarelli. Probably worse.

because you need to insulate yourself against the goaltending.
make goaltending as small a factor as possible by trying to assemble the highest scoring top 6 in the league.

the Flames are just now starting to draft and develop talent. it will be a big mistake to get rid of some young core pieces for a 3 month rental. i say keep the first and all the young d men, they are hard to come by

For sure. Dorion's team is in last place without their own 1st rounder. That's brutal.
He's cashed in on a desperate Kekäläinen last week, but other than that lets not forget the mess he has his team in

Then you still have a goaltending issue and the assets to fix that issue... are gone.

If we could just add the James Neal from last years playoffs, we just might be okay with what we got.

so?
score 4 goals per game, win cup, worry about having a goalie this summer.
still have rittich and the ability to turn players like brodie into assets.
Seriously, if Chicago can win with Huet and Niemi, the Flames can win with Smith and Rittich. But not with a rotating czarnik/frolik/bennett on the second line. Need Hossa. Need Dave Bolland.
I would be trying to add Hayes and Stone both, and if stone goes elsewhere, i'm doing what i can to get kreider in the deal with hayes.
There's no meaningful way to address the goaltending before the playoffs, so the best way to shore up that weakness is to simply score more goals.
It will have been a waste of a season to go in pat with this goaltending. Grab your balls, move some assets, give this team a chance to go all the way.
