But wait, don’t forget the trade deadline day rentals! You’re only 7 points out and climbing over 6 teams to get the last wildcard spot is completely doable. The players just have to want it as much as the coaches do.

We all thought McJesus would refuse to go to the Oilers but he did, why would Hughes be any different?

I think the league is expanding half to make money and half so the Oilers can equivocate about being 29th overall.

The 12.5M is now spent.

Exactly. Having one player like that is difficult under the cap. Two would cripple a team. Sure, they would get an effective player earning ELC money, which would be great if they were a contender already. As a terrible team, it won't do much for them. If they traded the pick, they could probably pick up some really nice pieces and expedite the rebuild.

Not to mention that Hughes would play behind McDavid until his ELC was up at the very least. Being on the second line with dufuses isn't going to put him is a great negotiating position for his next contract.

If the Oilers get 1st overall again (and they likely will), it would be in everyone's best interest that they trade the pick, or at least trade down.

Don't forget that even with adding a player like Hughes, their defense corps barely qualifies as NHL quality. And they've already hitched their wagon to Koskinen for better or worse.
 They'd still be screwed.

Enjoy the darkest depths of the standings Oiler fans.

I think the term Chiadenfreude outlives its now-departed namesake and lives on in the lexicon of perpetual No-Goodness.

There's a fair chance, as it stands today, that Jack Hughes is no good.

It would bring me tremendous joy if the Kings and the Sens somehow manage to win their respective games tonight to push the Oilers to 30 overall just 2 measly points from 31st place. Last place is where McLoser and his band of losers belong.

i feel sorry for any player drafted into that black hole...
after all this time, they are still getting lottery pick after lottery pick....

what an embarrassing franchise.... the NHL should be ashamed of themselves if the Oilers are gifted another number 1 pick overall.

They're quickly approaching "worst franchise in pro sports history" territory. Or maybe they're already there?

A. Contracts would be tough. Another big contract and Edmonton won't be able to afford 22 players.

B. He's seen what they did after McDavid which is sweet FA. Is he egotistical enough to think he's the guy who gets it done?

C. It's a crappy no good city.

If the Oilers draft #1 again, I see boos in their future.
First team boo'd at the draft for drafting? Would this be a first in not only NHL... but NA sports history?

the Cleveland Browns were pretty bad for a long time... but they look like they'll be decent now they drafted Mayfield, who looks like a player...

outside of that, the Clippers maybe?

i think the Oilers got them beat based on the idiocy of the NHL draft... no league has given so many #1 picks to a franchise in such a tight timeframe... not even close

i agree with the posters saying the Oilers should trade the pick if they win it... they could literally add 3 top six players to their lineup if they play their cards right...

There roster needs more than 1 player to fix it... and to be honest, from what i've seen, Hughes, who has been injured at lot (not sure if that's a red flag) or Kakko don't seem like generational talents to me. IF you got nashville to trade Tolvainen, PK Subban, Fabbro/Allard + a 2nd? i'd do that in a heartbeat if i were the GM of the oilers... you already have McDavid

But Katz loves his shiny new toys, so they'd probably pick Hughes anyways
