The thing is, Treliving never shows his hand publicly. He is never mentioned in the media and then boom, he makes a big move. This was the case for Hamilton when he was acquired and last year for Lindholm/Hanafin. I recall he was asked outright if Hamilton was going to be traded and he said no, then went and did just that.
I don't believe any rumours about what Treliving is doing because no one really knows until it happens. He doesn't manage out in the open.

Agreed that BT keeps his cards close to his vest on his end.
But there are other teams that seemingly have leaks, whether on purpose or not.
IMO its who you are hearing he is talking with rather than who we hear is talked about. There is a LOT of subterfuge going on this time of year.

None of those players were acquired at any significant cost. Stewart was a waiver claim. Shore was acquired for a 7th round pick at the following year's draft (which is shaping up to be one of the last 5-10 picks in the draft). Even Stone cost only a 3rd round pick and a conditional 5th rounder if he re-signed.
So, far that 3rd round pick for Stone is the most Treliving has given up for a deadline rental.

The fact he re-signed him shows that he made the move not thinking it was a rental and more likely a longer term fit so giving up the picks made sense.
Treliving has really only traded picks for guys with team control and with his history and knowledge of Stone he had a good idea that was a longer term fit.
I am not sure how he is going to do it and who will pay the price but if he makes a move for Stone I am confident he will be able to keep the player. That may cost the team someone else that we wouldn’t want to lose but I can’t see Treliving giving up a lot of futures for a short term player.

So far.
He really hasn’t been in this situation before.

True, Treliving never says too much publicly. But there were rumours that Hamilton was going to be traded, and a about a week before the trade, it was even so specific that Lindolm and Hanifin were in the rumours.
It was too bang on to just be coincidence. Someone had to have leaked something.

Stone plays nothing like those two players.
|
Another thing to consider is, Stone might not play on the second line all the time. It could very well turn out that we see:
Gaudreau Monahan Stone
Tkachuck Backlund Lindholm
Given the flexibility Peters has along with how he seems to like to move things around, it wouldn't surprise me to see him role this combination out there.
The only thing that would give me pause it that you're likely entering a bidding war with at least Winnipeg & Vegas, if recent rumours are accurate. The pursuit of Stone from a Flames standpoint should be predicted on him resigning. If he's not resigning, I have a hard time giving up anything more than a first or, say, mangipanne/Kylington and a mid round pick.
If the Flames are able to resign him, things get interesting. First I think this pushes the Flames into a legitimate cup contender status for the next 3 years, at least. But it will be at high cost. The offer likely starts with a 1st, Jankowski, & Kylington. If I'm Ottawa, I'm asking for the first, Jankowski & Valamaki. Maybe more. Maybe you ask for Dube instead of Jankowski as well, or you ask for more picks. For me, the tipping point may be Valamaki. If Valamaki is a must have for Ottawa, I'm walking away.
It may seem like too much, but again, you're likely going to have to outbid Winnipeg, Vegas & who knows maybe there's another more silent bidder out there like the Islanders. It's also important to consider that Ottawa will view this as a can't 'F___ this up' deal. They will look to extract everything they can out of the market. They have to. Sure the Senators have taken a public beating (for good reason), but most hockey exec's aren't as dumb, or smart, as they may seem.
Then again, the market is always shifting. The only people who know what the market actually are the GM's and their staff. Who holds sway? The seller, or the bidder?....
Fun to speculate though.

True. Plus, injuries almost always happen to key players on teams that go deep in the playoffs (except for Tampa in 2004 dammit).

They've had enough opportunity to swap Lindholm off the top line. Isn't happening, hasn't happened.
I just don't think Stone is in his wheelhouse, not because he can't do the trade, but because he doesn't get into bidding wars. Other teams have more to offer and they're going to pay.

I bet it has something to do with the eerie cloud of failure that some believe to follow Duchene from one destination to another.

I find him to be a 'me first' player, personally. And I don't find the lack of success that follows him around to be particularly surprising. Just my opinion.

Literally from one destination to the other, two places. Seems kind of crazy to lay the blame at his feet, two isn't much of a pattern.
Unless we're talking voodoo?

People felt the same way about Evander Kane this time last year as well.
Talented player with rough edges to his personality, and a cloud of failure following him around everywhere he went. Yet now that he's been slotted into a solid organization, he's a pretty important part of a top 5 NHL team.
