McQuaid is a physical 3rd pairing guy but he’s 32 and misses a lot of time with injuries.

Looks like Ducks might re-sign Silfverberg

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Contract talks are progressing between the camp for pending UFA winger Jakob Silfverberg and the Ducks. We’ll see where that goes. Anaheim really wants to keep him but needs resolution before Feb 25 obviously

I like the idea of adding toughness on the 4th line without paying a huge price for it. Brian Boyle or Pat Maroon are a couple of vets that come to mind - both on expiring contracts.

There are better rentals out there like Simmonds, Hayes, Panarin, or maybe Silfverberg but I expect the price will be high for those guys, and I don't think scoring is depth enough of a problem for the Flames to justify giving up a 1st+ for a playoff rental.

Gudas is a right shot. Are you going to sit Andersson for him? I wouldn't.

Plus they also have Prout on that side if they really needed toughness. Not to mention Stone as well. The right side has too many defense already.

Trade for any goalie that has put up a save % over .900 this year. It’s beyond ridiculous that Smith has an .889 % playing on this team.

Martin Marincin is on waivers. If the Flames want a LH defenceman, I think they should claim him. This would be an awesome pick up for the Flames.

He shoots left, plays the left side, is 26, makes $800K, has a contract that ends at the end of this season, would cost zero assets, and has excellent on-ice numbers.

Default 2018/2019 Trade Speculation and Rumors

Giggles and dreams before I take off for vacation:

Trade 1

To NYR: Austin Czarnik, 2019 1st round pick (CGY)
To CGY: Kevin Hayes (some % retained) - (extension gets negotiated 7 years, 5.75M per)

Rangers get a wild card in Czarnik and a 1st. Tree gets his #3 centre locked up, Hayes gets a long-term deal.

Trade 2

To CAR: Michael Frolik, Andrew Mangiapane, 2020 2nd round pick (CGY), 2019 4th round pick (NYI)
To CGY: Micheal Ferland (extension negotiated - 7 years, 4.5M per), Curtis McElhinney

Carolina gets Frolik as they continue to push for a playoff spot so they don't lose depth, and a 2nd + 4th. Flames get goalie depth for the run and bring back a player they believe in (Tree spoke to how hard it was to include Ferly). Ferly gives up some money (maybe?) for term and to come back to a city he has spoken highly of.

Depth for playoffs:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Ferland
Bennett - Hayes - Neal
Jankowski - Ryan - Hathaway
Dube - Quine - Lazar

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - Andersson
Kylington - Stone
Prout

Off-season:

Trade 1

To FLA: TJ Brodie
To CGY: 2019 1st, 2020 2nd round pick

Slightly less than what Muzzin got in return, but it's only for 1 year opposed to 1 year + playoffs. Florida builds out their D as they push in for Panarin and Goalie Bob.

Trade 2

To *Insert team*: Michael Stone
To CGY: 2019 5th round pick

Signings

Matthew Tkachuk (7 years, 7.25M)
Sam Bennett (2 years, 3M although I'd hope for 5-6 years with a 4'ish hit)
David Rittich (2 years, 3.25M)
Cam Talbot (1 year, 2.5M)
Taylor Fedun (1 year, 1M)

2019/2020 Roster

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Ferland
Bennett - Hayes - Neal
Jankowski - Ryan - Dube
Lazar

Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - Kylington
Fedun

Rittich
Talbot

Flames spend some future assets, but none are wasted on rentals and some are recouped in the Brodie trade.

I do both of those signings IMO - 7 x 4.5 for Ferly is well below what he will command in UFA as is 7 x 5.75 for Hayes.

Yes I want nothing to do with 7 year contracts for guys not likely to play in the top 6. That Ferland contract would be hated by year 2 would be my prediction. I am not big on signing Hayes until he is 33 at Neal money to be our 3rd line C. Also a lot of picks to give up for guys not impacting the top 6

I don't want to trade our 1st this year. I think Ferland is too inconsistent and injury prone and I don't think we need Hayes. Pass.

Yeah I picked the under on both, but I don't think either is a huge leap - maybe a bit of savings on them due to Tree's wizardry and the players wanting to win?

I'm into moving our 1st if it's not for a pure rental. 1st rounders shouldn't be moved on rentals in my eyes. That's too high of a cost for 2-4 months of work. I also think we have the chance to regain a 1st this summer due our defensive depth.

When you’re second overall you’re not going to be successful on any worthwhile waiver claims.

Hayes we acquire in a couple years, assuming they are still tight buddies and everything else stays the same with JG’s current projection etc, to further convince JG not to go to Philly.

You want to guarantee that package til he is 34 years old and for 31.5 million dollars?

Im a big Ferland guy, but that is a very very bad idea.

Very true. I wasn't even a big Ferly when he left, because I didn't like how he played when he was pushed down the roster. That said, I've got a bit of a hockey crush on the guy since he was here in town the other week giving interviews. I do think we should target a player with his skillset though...and that's a fairly rare skillset. It'd definitely come down to how much Tree believes in the person, because if he believes the effort will always be there I think you take the risk with the health.
