Smith reminds me so much of a lefty Jonas Hiller, guaranteed at least one weak goal usually early in a game, most passive/afraid looking way to glove pucks, plays way too deep in his net, goes down way too early, easily rattled, he just makes me feel nervous all the time when he starts now.

I thought this too I mean I can think back to at least 10 sure goals from him this year that he’s either just missed or has had terrible luck on. Even if just 5 of those go in I think we could be first in the league. Its really the one move Treliving has made this past offseason that has had a negative return on expectations so far which is actually quite remarkable. I hope Neal pulls out of the slump soon here and puts up a solid month for February, it would help push this team to the next level IMO.

His terrible numbers are the least of it. It's the timing of the goals, the way shots that are a routine save for a peewee goalie go right through him, or playing the puck unnecessarily and making bonehead decisions with it.

I had some sympathy for him as an old guy who hit the wall hard and fast. But after the Boston game where the Flames s***kicked the Bruins and still lost ONLY because of him. Then he comes out and says "We have to be better" that was it. I thought he could still be a bit of mentor or something but you can't s*** the bed that badly and that often and not own it.

None of us have a POV Smith view

But because you're so adamant that i shouldnt make such a definitive statement, i'll say this:

based on the unlikely factor of a screen based on how Wilson, Tkachuk and Smith are positioned, it is very likely that Smith had seen the puck from the shot and had the opportunity to make an educated judgement of the trajectory of the shot

But you cant doubt that other NHL goalies not named Smith would've made a save from that shot

i think that was the most frustrating loss of the season. i hope it stays that way.

flames had to overcome the officiating and their own goaltending all game, and almost came away with at least a point.

just trade for a goalie already ffs

The Flames win because of skill. Adding a guy won’t change them into a tough team
We’ve said this team has needed an identity for years. They have one. And more often than not that’s how they win
Don’t try and change that. They need to own what they are and beat teams on that basis
I completely agree. Adding one guy doesn't change the identity.

That being said, the refs put the whistles away early on in this one and given that this seems to be the case come playoff time, do the flames have what it takes to rise above? Will be interesting to watch down the stretch.

I didn’t like the way Andersson played that last Caps goal, he could have easily got to that puck and cleared the zone but hesitated and got caught in no man’s land.

Backstrom is a piece of ****, that last play was garbage. Someone should have two handed him in the teeth.

Until our skill gets so banged up from cheap slashes, hits after the whistle and so on that we're a step slower over 7 games.

We don't need a Peluso out there. We need a guy who can play up and down the lineup and discourage the dirty stuff.

My vote is Ferland. I'd accept Simmons. Maroon isn't going to get it done. But even Maroon adds more to this lineup than Mangiapane or Hathaway

the refs put the whistles away and then suddenly started calling penalties on the flames for breathing while continuing to put them away for the caps. complete ####ing disgrace

Boy that Backlund penalty with only two minutes left to go is just a killer. I really hope he gets the poorly timed penalties out of his system before the playoffs.

Default Flames lose 4-3

I didn’t get to see the game but based on the comments it appears Smith didn’t do the team any favors yet again and this leads to something I’ve been thinking about lately. Brad Treliving seems to be a genuinely nice guy and Smith apparently is a great teammate/locker room guy. Can Brad be “mean” enough to demote or release Smith if a deal comes along for a better backup? It’s easy for us to say Smith sucks get him off the team but Brad has to actually look him in the eye and tell him he’s no longer an NHL goalie. It would suck but I hope he has the stones to do it.

Chucky actually takes a lot of abuse every game that doesn't get called. I guess it's because of the way he plays and that's fine, but some of those calls have to be made. I know you hear the refs don't like being "shown up" by players like Chucky when he sells a call (yes he sells, but he does get legitimately chopped and hacked fairly consistently), but he takes a lot! The interference non-call, the slash to the back of the leg, the cross check at the very end... and to his credit, he very rarely beaks the refs. He usually takes it and doesn't talk too much to the refs which is definitely respectable.

I just think his "rat" reputation stops a lot of calls from going his away, even though he does draw a LOT of calls still. Refs need to recognize that he's actually a skill player and they need to lake those calls because he's not some 4th line plug just trying to get under people skin.

Brad Treliving has had to make a fair share of difficult personnel decisions as general manager.

- Not qualifying Emile Poirier after his well-publicized battles with addiction
- Letting go of the first man he hired as a head coach instead of letting pride get in the way
- Firing the reigning coach of the year
- Staring down Curtis Glencross and not even offering him a tryout in the offseason after he went to free agency
- Waiving Curtis Lazar, even with the player's consent, little over a year after paying a huge price for him

I don't think Treliving will struggle with managing Smith.

Oh and how that Niskanen slash on Tkachuk didn’t get called is laughable, that is a penalty all day.

Flames didn’t play well for the first 50 mins. Sleepy start after 9 days off. Our two power plays were anemic, could have been a lot worse with all the posts Washington hit. The chippy end is the best medicine for us.
Regroup for Sunday.
