I don't see how the Oilers could really ask for anything of significant value for Talbot; especially a young roster player and a pick.
They've basically thrown him under the bus this season, and his numbers are pretty ugly.
I guess we'll see what the market dictates for rental goalies, but I'm skeptical.

LOL Dreger; “Talbot is going to fetch something that matters in return,”. He's so irrelevant he has to resort to stuff like this. A 4th or 5th round pick could be considered something that matters so he's pretty well covered when they get that in return.

I agree, but I don't think it will be a rental type trade. Probably more of a hockey trade. Whoever picks him up will likely have had permission to talk and sign a contract right away. The asking price does seem high regardless. Especially for someone coming out of Edmonton.

All it takes is for one GM to be in love with the player....its nothing unusual.

That being said, as a pure rental with the numbers he has (even on a tire fire of a team) its unlikely anyone gives up much value unless an extension is in place first.

That's not even the asking price, Dreger says he doesn't know what that is. Just more guessing.

I call BS.

What teams that would be looking at rentals would pay two pieces for a goaltender that is suffering through back to back morbid seasons? And even if he wasn't ... which of these teams needs a goaltender?

None of the divisional playoff spot teams need a goaltender.

Only Boston comes to mind and only because Rask is on IR with a concussion.

I can see Arizona taking a flyer on Talbot if Raanta is done for the year and they have playoff aspirations but the Oilers won't be getting a great return.

I wouldn't mind giving Talbot a shot, I think with proper defense and being away from the oilers he could be a great backup for this team.

I wonder if the Flames circle back to Maroon, another guy that they had serious talks with in the summer. But a guy with some size to go along with some skill. A guy that would be an upgrade in the 4th line wing, but can play up in case of injuries.

"But here’s the thing: They almost signed Ryan Reaves last summer - a lot of people perhaps didn’t hear that. They actually thought they had him, but then Reaves had a last-minute change of heart and went back to Vegas. But I think when they included Ferland in the Carolina deal, I think they thought they were getting Reaves. So I think they feel probably they need a little more muscle up front, even though James Neal is a pretty rugged offensive player on the third line. So I think that’s the idea for Calgary

Basically, he sees Calgary looking for size / strength up front. I hope they stay away from Ferland. Who else would fit that category, at a reasonable cost (that would also remove Simmonds)? More like a tougher depth type guy.
I would rather add a big player with skill than a north-south hitter. Or go for a skilled guy who can slot in up and down the lineup.
If we did go for that physical guy, go for a cheaper option like Maroon vs Simmonds/Ferland.
If we are adding a 2/3 line forward, essentially we are breaking up the 3M line and moving Frolik to 4LW to accommodate the new guy with Backlund and/or Tkachuk to help drive play (reverting to 3M in games where they need a shakeup)
MY preference would be a guy like Hayes, Staal or Coyle (if Minny drop) or Silfverberg (if Ducks drop)/Dzingel/Nyquist (though smaller), as I see them offering more.

Simmonds gets a load of PP points, but he isn't getting on that top unit, and on the second unit he is either bumping Neal (who we want to get going) or we roll two guys who are strictly shooters (may work, but less flexible) I do not think we have the team makeup to get the best out of Simmonds, and Ferland for me does not drive a line, and would be very dependent on linemates.

basically, I am not a fan of a one-dimensional pickup unless it is cheap, as the team is playing well and risks disrupting their chemistry with a guy who needs to be worked around to validate a trade.

Maroon would be a fine pickup for like a 6th-rounder. He can step in and play. But there should be no real assets sent back. It's like the Wild paying a 6th for Jones years ago -- and Jones was having a better year than Maroon is.

I just can't see Treliving being quiet. He's not known as a sit on your hands GM to begin with, but with Gaudreau having three years past this year the Flames window is pretty much defined at four years starting this Spring.

I think he does more than many think ... go for it now, but also to reward this group for a great season.

All bets off if they slide though.

Are the Blues who are 3 points out of a playoff spot going to sell Maroon for such a low return?

If I was Armstrong I would rather keep Maroon and take my chances on the wild card spot than take a 6th round pick.

Maybe he would look at it if the Blues drop out of the race in the next 4 weeks.

rewarding them for a good season is an interesting point.

Does it say the organization has a bunch of confidence in you if they do nothing, or if they move significant picks does that tell the group "we're in it with you all the way".

From my perspective, it's always a good thing when management steps up and supports a team to meet a material or end goal. Like when the boss springs for pizza when you're working late.

These next 4 weeks will be telling - with how tight the wildcard race is (and even 3rd in central now) there could be a lot of movement, and team sthat are out now like the Blues may become playoff teams, and teams that are in now may become sellers.

Both those things can be true IMO.

My one observation about BT though is that he may believe "chemistry" is more important than anything else when it comes to success on the ice. So in that sense I can see him doing very little with this roster depending on injuries or if he is 100% sure any new addition will fit in the room seamlessly.

Again, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" springs to mind.

Agreed.

He certainly spring to life to "fix" chemistry, so he's likely hesitant to alter it.

Also wouldn't be surprised to hear that he kicked the tires with Giordano, Backlund, Gaudreau and Hamonic to see what they think about certain opportunities to add.
