It’s a building that will not stand the test of time, IMO. I’m not an architect and few would consider my taste to be anything resembling trendsetting, but I do feel that Rogers Place will be destined to spend more time as a blight than a marvel.
For dip#### who tries to argue about an arena vs a library, remind them that our library is more with seeing and the beer will be cheaper as well.

Yea I'm sure when you tally the numbers there'll be more people coming to see our library than Edmontons arena since it's so much more worth seeing and all...

In all seriousness the library will likely have a a couple hundred thousand more visitors than either the Saddledome or Rogers Place in 2019, so yeah.

And a library is free to use and u can stay there as long as u want since ur not expected to spend money to be there. Pardon my language but which idiots compare that to an arena where u have to pay 300$ just to enter and have overpriced food so some billionare gets richer? Ur comparing a public service too a corporation.

Here is an excellent testimony to the value of a library, and why some people should perhaps spend a little more time there than here...

How do you figure that? 45 Oilers home games plus 30 premiere concerts selling out each year gives Rogers Place 1.4 million attendees, and that's a conservative estimate because I'm not even including Oil Kings games, niche events like Harlem Globe Trotters, other concerts, people using or attending the attached community rink, or the bars and restaurants and hang out spot (Ford Hall I think it's called). To equal that the library would have to average 3800 people a day, and that's a complete turnover of 316 people every hour of every day for an entire year. I saw somewhere that our entire library system had around 2 million visitors each year, are you suggesting that out of the 20 branches across our expansive city 75% are choosing to go to the central location? I don't think you have any evidence or even any sound reasoning for your claim that one library location will outdraw Rogers Place. Libraries are essential for the City and I actually like the Central Library after checking it out but it's not a bigger draw than a big league arena.

Apparently it is a much bigger draw.

The old central library was handling about 3500 visits per day, 1.1M per year, and, as starseed notes, projections for the new library are much higher. Here's a concise infographic: https://calgarylibrary.ca/news/curre...ntral-library/

I must have clicked on the wrong forum thread, I thought this was specific to E=NG Chiarelli & Nicholson special edition.
Let's not turn this into another Library vs Arena debate and beat that dead horse again......

I've been in both Rogers and T-Mobile, built at roughly the same time. T-Mobile is superior in every way: access, seating, sight lines, lobbies, food options, etc.

^^Yea, well when it's built with private money and they actually had to make an effort to attract people and do a good job. They did a good job with the team as well. The Bell centre and the Air Canada are also much nicer than the Rogers building.

I don't think "built with private money" has anything to do with it. The architects and contractors get paid the same no matter what the source of funds is.

There's an absolute comparison. 1.1M visitors (using the old data) for a 240M investment. Means that if you are saying a new arena gets 2M visitors, that means that the city should spend a maximum of approximately 450M dollars to get a similar return for # of visitors on investment.
The Flames were asking for a lot more than that. And I'm using visitor data to the old library, and taking your numbers at face value.

If you are comparing use of public services, I think you also need to consider WHO aka using it, in addition to the absolute numbers.
The socioeconomic status of library users is almost definitely lower than those who attend NHL games. And from the city’s perspective, while you want to benefit your entire population, they tend to prioritize marginalized communities more so than well-to-do groups. The same goes for public transit, housing, etc.
So even if they aren’t directly comparable numbers, the fact that a library provides a service for a group of people who are less likely to be able to enjoy other activities due to financial constraints, is in itself an argument. A soacialist’s argument, but argument nonetheless.

Okay.. enough library and arena talk. Unless you have a mineral report on the city of Edmonton's water supply, are reveling in the colossal mess of the Oilers, or pontificating on who will be the next GM fired by the Oilers, Take it to another thread, hippies.
