Draft picks and prospects are more valuable today than ever, and the cap renders it nearly impossible to return anything remotely comparable in value to the haul of assets in the Lindros trade.

Lindros also was not the highest paid player in a capped league. Managing that contract is going to be a challenge for any team. It would be different if McDavid was the best player by a significant margin, but he isn’t. He is right up there with the other elite players, but he hasn’t separated himself yet gets paid more.
