Right.
Why does he sit at the draft table? He couldn't keep his mouth shut at the Mac-T press conference... what are the odds that he keeps his mouth shut at the draft table... let alone behind closed doors.
|
Exactly and even if Nicholson thinks that is true due to Lowe's title not including any real power look at how the organization is structured.
Mac T : Senior Vice President - Hockey Operations
Howson: VP - Player Development
I'm sure he has no pull or input into the decisions his two buddies and long time partners in the Oilers organization are making though.

When I saw the updated thread title this morning I thought for a second Nicholson had been fired too.
Nope, he still has a job and proceeded to lead a hilarious press conference. As a Flames fan this is hilarious and the timing couldn't be any better with a long break in games.

I remember when Treliving said:
"You get one chance to develop a player."
"One."
They had this chance with McDavid. They could have cleaned out all of the crony nepotism, maximized value for the poisoned culture club that existed in 2015.
They didn't.
They've marginalized his ability to develop as a professional both in his ability to lead, relate, and connect with his teammates to make the entire group better.
It isn't his fault. These are things that are taught by other by the example of walking the talk. Gio is a great example. But it can't be mandated... it needs to be infectious.
The Oilers consistently throw the keys on the table to top picks and throw everyone else into the deep end and ask them to swim.

I know. There is no doubt he's letting his thoughts be known.
Plus when he walks into any room his presence will stop or at least throttle people from saying the critical things that need to be said.
This doesn't change based on his position on an Org chart.
It changes by his presence NOT being on ANY org chart of the franchise.

I think McDavid leaving by 2021-2022 is almost too optimistic for the oilers. I give it 1 more year and Orr will let it leak that he wants out.
The guy doesn’t even enjoy playing any more because of how toxic the atmosphere is in that organization. He took a “discount” under the promise that they would build the team into a contender using the extra cap space he would save them. That was a complete lie because they just turned around and spent that extra cap space on Draisaitl when they over-payed him.

Can't say they are tanking - hurts tix sales.
Can't say the players are crap - hurts morale. But say Talbot is crap.
Can't say Chia acted alone - hurts Koskinen (but can't say they controlled Chia - hurts them).

McDavid has GM'ing the last few weeks. After all, he stated point-blank in public that anyone who doesn't think they can win can get the hell out. Obviously that included Chiarelli!

I actually think its fairly likely. If McDavid's camp fully realize that the Oilers are years away from turning this thing around (maybe they already know it) the rumblings of him wanting out are going to grow rapidly. As a generational talent he has all the leverage too. If he gets tired of it he's going to demand to leave, regardless of contract.

This is actually pretty funny. He believes in the players in the room and it's on them to turn it around. But the guy that assembled the team gets fired? That makes no sense. The problem is that they have signed all the players in the room to contracts that are basically unmovable, so they are forced into believing in them. The only other option is to trade everyone and lose for Hughes. Lol.

This is a big consideration alongside cleaning up the cap situation, dealing with an impatient fanbase, etc.
Of course, management and ownership probably won't want to get out of the way so no one with any amount of promise or backbone is going to want the job without a ridiculous contract because it very well may be their last in the NHL. This could be beautiful to watch.

Not entirely true, I could see a good GM, if given complete free reign to burn it down and start again with no interference seeing the Oilers as a prime rebuild candidate, It could be Lindros 2.0.
I don't for a moment think Katz would go this route but I can see it being a tempting prospect for someone if they did
